This week, Intel co-signed a letter to President Obama, calling for the Administration to adopt the goal of giving “every household and business access to timely, useful and actionable information on their energy use.” The letter was signed by more than 45 major organizations in support of this idea: “By giving people the ability to monitor and manage their energy consumption, for instance, via their computers, phones or other devices, we can unleash the forces of innovation in homes and businesses.” (Read more about it on CNET and Earth2Tech)

The potential benefits are staggering:

“If all U.S. households saved 15% on their energy use by 2020, for example, the greenhouse gas savings would be equivalent to taking 35 million cars off the road and would save consumers $46 billion on their energy bills, or $360 per customer each year.”

At an event in Washington, DC, hosted by Google and The Climate Group and featuring Carol Browner, Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change, participants including Intel discussed policies and technologies that can drive innovation in this field and help consumers save money and conserve energy. (Intel is developing some great technologies in this area, you can read about a few of them here)
