Learn how Arvind and his team shape cutting-edge innovations and make a difference in the process.
From Childhood Hobby to Full-Time Profession
Driven by a fascination for electronics, Arvind Sundaram aspired to become an engineer from a young age. After completing his master’s degree in robotics, he worked for various companies across the world before joining his dream company—Intel.
What made it the perfect fit? He says, “Intel is at the forefront of technology and has its DNA across so many innovations. That was one of the main reasons why I aspired to join Intel. The amount of technical knowledge it has is unrivalled.”
Now, with over a decade working in Intel’s Client Computing Group, Arvind is a principal engineer helping develop cutting-edge innovations in the PC and desktop segments.
Driving Innovation at Intel
Arvind has been a part of several exciting innovations aimed at solving real-life problems. He and his team created the Honeycomb Glacier. The results of a survey conducted on gamers across geographies got the team thinking about the issues of ergonomics and usage of multiple screens. From there, they hit a home run with the creation of a dual-screen gaming notebook, formerly codenamed Honeycomb Glacier. The Honeycomb Glacier’s primary screen is elevated to eye-level for gameplay and the secondary screen falls below it to solve the ergonomics issues, while also providing a chat screen.
The team has also developed a pocketable computing device, formerly codenamed Glacier Hill, for gamers looking to explore virtual reality. They can do so by attaching the device to a docking station or headset device for easy access. As wireless displays cause latency and PCs connected with long wires can cause accidents, Arvind’s team built the portable device to handle high-resolution graphics.
His love for pushing boundaries doesn’t stop there. Along with his team, he has worked on varying form-factors related to miniaturizing, all-in-ones, and wearable PCs. He is always looking to discover and build new technological innovations with his team.
“We develop system technologies, as well as technologies around electronic circuitry, packaging, mechanical, thermal, display, audio, and speech sensors.”
Designing 3D-Printed Face Shield for Essential Workers
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Arvind knew Intel’s innovations could make a difference. He particularly wanted to help high-risk essential workers who only had simple, generic masks for protection. He ran his idea past Intel and they were quick to support him in creating 3D-printed face shields that were tailored to Indian faces. After receiving feedback on the prototype, the team created a special mold to ensure the shields were pocket-friendly and helped prevent involuntary face touching.
“This investment in the mold helped us create thousands of low-cost shields—and we enabled a local partner who could distribute them across India. The first 8,000 shields were sponsored by Intel and we gave them to several non-governmental organizations.”
Continuous Learning—Key to Success
Arvind says, “I constantly look for new challenges that could be developed in the future. Intel has taught me the importance of keeping myself updated and learning persistently, which has helped me stay ahead of the curve. My team and I work on several technologies across segments, and that is made possible only by continually learning and staying abreast with developments in those fields.” He advises those interested in pushing their careers to the edge consider Intel. It’s a company that deeply values curiosity, a growth mindset, and the eagerness to continuously learn.
