Shanna, from Intel’s Global Diversity team, describes her excitement about Intel’s support of the events leading up to the dedication of the monument to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the National Mall.
“Will I cry? Probably.” This is what one employee, Dawn, had to say about her opportunity to be part of history in the making. Dawn and several other Intel employees are embarking on an Intel-sponsored trip to attend the once in a lifetime unveiling of the monument on the National Mall honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We like to refer to Intel as a “great place to work,” but I think we should change that phrase to “fantastic place to work!”
From August 25-28, 2011, hundreds of thousands of visitors will converge in our nation’s capital for a long weekend of events celebrating the unveiling and dedication of the memorial. As a platinum level sponsor, Intel will be there to help celebrate at the Women Who Dare to Dream luncheon honoring the women of the Civil Rights movement and how their legacy continues to inspire us today.
This year marks the 48th anniversary of MLK’s March on Washington. While some of us, myself included, are not old enough to have been alive during this historic moment in the civil rights movement, MLK’s legacy lives on today. The course of my collegiate curriculum in International Relations had covered this speech and the larger civil rights movement in general, but I had never really been pushed to reflect on how much I personally have benefited from MLK’s dream for the American public and how it is still relevant today. I re-read the text of his famous “I have a Dream” speech delivered on that historic day in 1963, and I kid you not, I got goose bumps. His hope-filled dream of justice, equality, and peace is one that I hope to share with my future children and them, with their children. I encourage those of you who were not able to attend the March on Washington to attend the dedication weekend events and share your thoughts and experiences with your children.
As Dawn said, “By having the opportunity to attend this event, I will pay respect to all those who fought so vigorously for equality. What’s most important to me is that my children have grown up in a world where people are judged on their merits and they feel empowered and free to be themselves without fear.” We could not agree more and in the spirit of the memorial dedication, we have taken time to reflect on MLK’s legacy and share his thoughts on education as a key opportunity to set people free. That is why we will be spending Saturday afternoon inspiring the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians at theDream Keepers event, where we will be doing cool, hands-on science activities with youth. If through sponsoring this event, we inspire even one child to be an engineer, then we will have done our job!
