National Biodiversity Week took place from May 16th – 25th, providing opportunities for people to connect with nature and explore the rich variety of life in Ireland.
To coincide with the national celebration of biodiversity, Intel invited 4th-class students from Leixlip primary schools to a special event held at the Intel campus. The event, which was attended by 300 students, was hosted by Éanna Ní Lamhna, an Irish biologist, environmental consultant, radio and television presenter, author, and educator.
Éanna led a fun and engaging session focused on great Irish biodiversity, taking students on a virtual trip through Irish wildlife habitats – from bogs to beaches and woodland to grassland. Students learned how habitats work and which creatures and plants to look out for in each one, from the very rare to the most common.
Much of the talk was based on a book recently published by Éanna called ‘Great Irish Biodiversity Book’. There was a special surprise for all of the students at the end of the talk they were each presented with their own copy of this book.
The book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through six types of Irish habitats, from woodlands to boglands, exploring the plants and animals that are specially adapted to thrive in these environments.
