How Intel Accelerates HPC with Proven Solutions

Today, research organizations and businesses expect solutions from Intel that simplify HPC system deployment and maintenance. And they should. After all, Intel has been in the HPC space for 20 years. As HPC systems are set up, use and maintenance gets easier. However, it’s worth acknowledging the significant work and collaboration with ISVs and other partners that has to happen behind the scenes to rapidly push effective HPC solutions forward.

Nurturing a Healthy HPC Ecosystem

It takes much more than a village to build effective HPC solutions. It takes hard work across a number of levels, starting with the development of our industry leading HPC portfolio, which now includes our 3rd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors with built-in AI, unique persistent memory, exascale-class storage and powerful software tools, including the Intel oneAPI HPC Toolkit.

Beyond our own technology, our support for and collaboration with third parties, including independent software vendors (ISVs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), original design manufacturers, standards organizations and channel resellers is essential to accelerating HPC progress. For example, Intel reference configurations provide the engineering crews of our OEM partners a strong foundation to build on so they can push better solutions out the door faster. And while our reference architecture is an essential resource for ISVs, we also provide assistance on a deeper level.

Intel application engineers work closely with ISV software engineering teams to optimize their solutions to take advantage of Intel technology. We help our partners explore questions like whether or not an application can take advantage of Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX-512) and Intel Deep Learning Boost, how many cores should be used based on licensing models and many other factors.

The help doesn’t only move in one direction. We also listen carefully to our partners suggestions, including input on what customers in specific segments, such as life sciences or financial services, want and need. And we work closely with ISVs to gather critical feedback from end users that helps us push solution improvements forward faster.

Intel also contributes to nearly all of the major open-source applications that are widely used in HPC. And we have long been one of the largest contributors to Linux, including providing the second-most contributions to Linux Kernel 5.10 development.

A comprehensive, future-driven approach

As part of an early effort to bring order to extremely challenging and inefficient HPC system rollouts, Intel introduced its first reference architectures with the Intel Cluster Ready program 15 years ago. We have rapidly advanced our related offerings and solutions ever since. Today, Intel Select Solutions along with our reference architectures, our collaboration with ISVs, and our end-user collaborations help speed time to value for key HPC workloads, including HPC/AI convergence, genomics analytics, simulation and modeling, and more.

Intel’s solution focused HPC mindset and approach has been game changing. Our work on go-to open-source codes ensures developers automatically get versions of applications like LAMMPS, GROMACS and OpenFOAM that are optimized to run on Intel systems.  And for end customers, knowing that the applications they run are tested and optimized on Intel provides peace of mind and helps them stay focused on getting important work done.

Patricia (Trish) A. Damkroger is vice president and general manager of the High Performance Computing organization in the Data Platforms Group at Intel Corporation. She leads Intel’s global technical and high-performance computing (HPC) business and is responsible for developing and executing strategy, building customer relationships and defining a leading product portfolio for technical computing workloads, including emerging areas such as high-performance data analytics, HPC in the cloud and artificial intelligence. An expert in the HPC field, Damkroger has more than 27 years of technical and managerial expertise both in the private and public sectors. Prior to joining Intel in 2016, she was the associate director of computation at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where she led a 1,000-member group comprised of world-leading supercomputing and scientific experts. Since 2006, Damkroger has been a leader of the annual Supercomputing Conference (SC) series, the premier international meeting for high performance computing. She served as general chair of the SC’s international conference in 2014 and has held many other committee positions within industry organizations. Damkroger holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. She was recognized on HPC Wire’s “People to Watch” list in 2014 and 2018.
