Kicking off the interview series, Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger talks with Elizabeth Bramson-Boudreau, MIT Technology Review CEO and publisher, discussing technology superpowers and bold statements for the future. Continuing the smart conversations with our top leaders, Rose Schooler discusses datacenter trends; and Sandra Rivera and Nick McKeown are featured on individual MIT Technology Review Business Lab Podcasts to discuss AI and edge computing.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Elizabeth Bramson-Boudreau, MIT Technology Review CEO and publisher, discuss the elements fueling digital innovation and transformation.

Even after 50 years, the basic premise of Moore’s law continues to inspire us today. Pat Gelsinger outlines four technology “superpowers”:

  • Everything is becoming capable and infused with compute
  • Every individual thing and every person are becoming connected
  • There is massive cloud-based infrastructure that scales and is accessible at the edge
  • The development and growth of AI

These are fundamentally shaping how we experience the world. And while each is powerful in its own right, they are also causing the others to be more powerful and accelerate more rapidly. This is why we can say they are driving the digitization of everything and why Intel is excited to be participating in all four of them.

Rose Schooler, CVP Global Data Center and AI Sales at Intel, and Elizabeth Bramson-Boudreau, MIT Technology Review CEO and publisher, talk about the monumental shift in computing towards ubiquitous computing and the cloud to the rise of the edge and more.

Gartner predicts that from 2020 to 2025, infrastructure strategies that integrate on-premises, co-location, cloud, and edge delivery options will go from 20% to 85%.1 That’s a huge shift in a very short period.

Flexible consumption models introduced by hyperscalers are changing the face of compute consumption—from the ways in which compute is delivered to the workload instances that are being run. Workloads are the new roadmap. Where, how, and what workload you are running and what outcome you are seeking are all key factors in the compute you need.

Sandra Rivera, Executive VP and GM of the Datacenter and AI Group at Intel, and MIT Tech Review's head of US insights Laurel Ruma talk about the changing landscape and increased demands of edge-to-cloud computing.

According to Gartner, by 2025, 75% of data will be created outside the data center.2 In many instances bandwidth and latency constrains data movement between the edge and cloud, reducing compute efficiency and effectiveness. The Internet of Things and the Intelligent Edge, overall, continue to fuel an exponential growth of data from new devices need to process data and inform action in real time.

The solution? Compute Everywhere.

We are fast moving into a world where cloud and edge will eventually merge into a compute fabric that’s intelligent and dynamic, where applications and services run seamlessly and where you will meet service level requirements in real time.

Sandra Rivera discusses issues around speed and bandwidth, the impact to machine and deep learning, data security, and even managing data sovereignty in a global environment.

Nick McKeown, SVP and GM of the Network and Edge Group, and MIT Tech Review's head of US insights Laurel Ruma talk about what “intelligent edge computing” is and some of the technological advancements driving it including 5G and where it is today.

McKeown discusses how 5G is proving to be very relevant to edge computing and there is a huge amount of innovation going on between cloud service providers, the public Internet, and mobile operators with everyone working to figure out new business relationships and opportunities. McKeown goes further in depth on the topic of 5G, and the incredible impact it is having not just on the speed of data, but the volumes of data being moved, the impact to data security and sovereignty, and the incredible power it is bringing to edge computing.

The future of edge computing on 5G is a lot like the wild west right now: exciting, growing, expanding, and terrifying; combined with massive amounts of innovation, entrepreneurship, and competition.
