Intel X710-BM2: Which Firmware Image to choose for SFP & SFP+ compatibility (nvmupdate)

Dear all,

as our SFP+-Port (10GbE) isn't compatible with SFP (1 GbE), I am looking for the right firmware image to provide compatibility.

Toolchain: Several years ago (FW Generation 6p01) I used eeupdate64e to programm the X710 Flash, but now it seems nvmupdate64e is the way to go. I downloaded the FW-Images 8p30 and updated my network driver (kernel module) i40e.

Up until now, I couldn't figure out which Image is suitable for both SFP+ (10 GbE) and SFP (1GbE).

Can you give me any advice to help me fix this?

Hello IPE_CKE,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

Before we proceed, let me check. Are you designing a board or a system with embedded X710-BM2?

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Hello Mr Michael L.,

the board carrying the X710-BM2 is already designed.

Up until now we used the Firmware image named "XL710_X710_6p01_SFI_Backplane_MCTP_CFGID7p0_Quad_800034AA.bin".

The 10GbE over SFP+ DAC/fibre worked as expected.

However, the problem comes with 1GbE SFP.

I can't build a link over normal SFP-Modules. I validated the modules using an Intel Ethernet X710DA2 SVR.

Thats the reason why I suspect the firmware image to be the root cause.

Christoph Keil

Hello IPE_CKE,

Thank you for the quick reply. So the board has been designed, however this is in the testing stage? Or this is a production system already?

Hello Mr Michael L,

we are developing a new board based on the old one concering the ethernet controller.

Thats why we want to fix our SFP/SFP+ compatibility issue.

Hello, @IPE_CKE:

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

We want to address the following questions to better understand this situation:

Could you please confirm if you are using a document to ensure that the migration process would be correct?

Could you please let us know if the new implementation has been verified by Intel?

We are waiting for your reply to these questions.

Best regards,

@CarlosAM_INTEL.

Hello CarlosAM_INTEL,

our schematics are based on Intels reference schematics of the X710 controller.

The X710 supports SFP+ perfectly but when it comes to SFP I am not able to achieve a link.

I just couldn`t figure out which nvm-image matches my requirements.

Best regards
