Atom x7405C 4-core • Really only supporting 16GB of RAM when using DIMMs?

The specs-site of the Atom x7405C 4-core specifies that 32GB of RAM are supported. There is no mention of a limitation to 16GB when using DIMM modules.

And that's why I really would appreciate if this discrepancy could be clarified. Because the Atom x7405C 4-core is not an old processor, it was introduced in 2024 and it is used by brand new NAS models.

So, this detail really matters for the NAS users around the globe. When using ZFS as the NAS filesystem, 32GB of RAM would be ideal for the ZFS ARC. The question above, thus,  is not an 'artificial' question, it has a substantial impact on the NAS operation of many users and SMB companies.

Hello @SWK,

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

The specification says Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type).

When using DDR4 or LPDDR5 it can support up to 32 GB, but using DDR5 it can support up to 16 GB.

Best regards,

Hi Diego,

thanks for the clarification. Appreciated.

If it wasn't so important I wouldn't follow up:

  • Does the limit of 16GB RAM really also apply to DDR5 with 4800MHz, or more accurately 4800 MT/s?
  • Or does this limit only apply to DDR5 with higher clock-rates than 4800?

I do see RAM suppliers with 30 years of market-experience who are officially supporting & offering 32GB S0-DIMM modules with 4800MHz (JEDEC Norm PC5-38400-S) for the Atom x7405C 4-core.

They are even providing a money-back warranty. So, they must be sure the 32GB SO-DIMM modules with 4800 MHz work reliable with the Atom x7405C 4-core.
