Why does BayTrail upscale 720x400 text mode to 800x600

We have received several mainboards based on Intel's BayTrail. These system-on-a-chip processors include video card functionality.

Both of the the BayTrail boards apparently output 800x600 resolution to the screen when in standard VGA text mode (just sitting at a DOS prompt demonstrates this). (We determined the resolution using the OSD on the monitor).

VGA text mode should be 720x400. Since the VBIOS upscales to 800x600, then the monitor upscales it again, it produces a very fuzzy output that is hard on the eyes.

Does anyone know why the BayTrail does this? And more importantly, how can we cause it to NOT do this? The mainboard manufacturer, Jetway, claims that they have no control over this since they did not write the VBIOS nor did they make the video chip.

Hello danielnice0200 ,

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

In order to better understand this situation, could you please tell us if this situation happens with one or various panels? In case that you ignore this information, please reproduce the mentioned condition with panels manufactured by different companies and different characteristics and please let us know the results.

Could you please let us know the VBIOS versions related to this? Please update them to the latest version and inform us the results.

Could you please give us all the information of the affected motherboards?

Please give us all the information that may answer these questions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best Regards,

Carlos_A.

Carlos,

We have produced this problem on well over 10 different monitors -- All report 800x600 where 720x400 is expected.

The model we use most is the ELO 1515L touch screen, but any monitor will demonstrate the problem.

We do not know how to get the VBIOS version. Jetway gave us this method http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005749.html# 3 Frequently Asked Questions about Video BIOS but it does not work. On Windows 7, it reports "VBIOS 0.0". On Windows 10, it does not even list VBIOS.

Please tell us how to determine the VBIOS version. Both the Jetway NF9N and NF9T boards use a Celeron N2930 @ 1.83GHz.

Thank you for your help.

Hello danielnice0200,

Thanks for your reply.

Our suggestion is to contact back the board manufacturer.

They should implement the VBIOS modifications that may solve the cited inconvenience.

We hope that this information may help you.

Jetway has told us that they cannot modify the VBIOS and that it was supplied by Intel.

If there is a modification they can make, can you please forward me detailed information on what tool(s) and procedures are needed? I will forward these to Jetway.

Alternatively, is there a way that we can override this 800x600 resolution in software (by tweaking VGA registers or using VBIOS calls)? This way Jetway does not need to be involved.

Carlos,

All of the links in the posts you referenced are broken.

Is there a VBIOS function call to override the 800x600 up-scaling? We can make this function call at start up and avoid modifying the VBIOS.

Hello danielnice0200 ,

Thanks for your update.

The communications of the mentioned forum are the following:

By the way, the needed mode can be configured within the VBIOS/GOP by using the listed tool as you may confirm at the following screenshot:

Due to these facts, you need to contact the motherboard manufacturer with the listed requirements to perform the desired VBIOS customization.

We hope that this information is useful to you.

Carlos,

We told Jetway to use the tool you referred to. In fact, we sent them a link to this forum thread.

But, when they choose "mode 3h, 720x400 text", the text video output is still in 800x600.

It is presented to the software as 720x400, but it outputs to the display at 800x600.

This is incorrect behavior and it causes text to be blurry and hard to read.

How can we get the Baytrail to stop fudging 720x400 into 800x600 before sending to the screen?
