I just purchased 4 Dell Optiplex 960 computers with WIndows 7 x64. I am having this issue on all 4 machines. Intermittently the computer disconnects from the network and also at times it will show that it is a 10mb connection. I updated the drivers to 11.5.10 dated 12/10/2009. The error in the event log is source: e1kexpress Event ID 27 "Network link has been disconnected." The workstations all connect to a Dell switch.
I spoke to Dell and they have no clue.
Help is appreciated.

1/13 9:30am: no dropouts, no e1kexpress events at all, speed steady at 1Gbps in 39 hours since downgrading to Microsoft driver 10.5.1.0. On reboot, machine connects immediately at 1Gbps. NETLOGON, DNS lookups, folder redirection, group policy processing, Time-Service all work flawlessly (was getting various errors at reboot when connection failed to start fast enough).
Snee, that's a very interesting thread. Observations:
- Intel rep Mark H confirms on 11/6/09 that the 82567LM-3 does not have a SIPS setting; that's only available on the 82567LM. He adds that "Any network connection or adapter that does not show the setting does not have support for the option or does not have support for the option in that OS."
- Snee, you seem to have concluded on 11/20/09 that the 82567LM-3_is_ implementing SIPS but it's just not configurable, hence your workaround to disable monitor standby.
- CGretski reports 1/12/10 that disabling power saving didn't help.
- Several posters confirm that Microsoft driver 10.5.1.0 solves the problem.
So I guess the Microsoft 10.5.1.0 driver is the best option for now. Not sure what that may be missing that later drivers have.
Watch out for Windows Update optional updates, or updating the driver from the driver tab of the NIC. That takes you back to the November 2009 Intel driver, I think it was 11.5.4.0.
Intel: any news on this? Have you duplicated the issue? Is a fix in the works?

A thought: maybe the newer drivers are programmed with the assumption that SIPS is available. But since it is apparently not available on the 82567LM-3, the driver tries to control the power but can't, giving these flaky connections.

Thank you everyone for the information you posted. Although configuring SIPS is not supported on these connections, Intel engineers are looking into a resolution to this issue. If I find out anything else, I will let you know.

I've just started trouble-shooting issues with 2x DC7900 SFF's which have the 82567LM-3 NICs. I've tried all sorts of things trying to get the issues resolved.
Some of the symptoms I have observed include Netlogon errors each time the computer restarts, DNS resolution errors, issues resolving DFS shares and obviously group policy processing issues. I think there might also be an issue with the NIC registering itself in DNS.
Something of interest which I have found to help is to configure the NIC with a static IP Address. This seems to prevent the NIC from 'dropping out', especially during start-up.
Naturally I'm very keen to see Intel (or HP) resolve this post haste!

Somewhat off topic, I have an optiplex 760 (new) with the same nic. I'm using it for day trading, & sometimes when I slide my price stops ( that action is sent to the platform's server) they disappear for ext. periods. Platform tech said if It is a trading vol. issue that is causing prob., to disable check summing & offloading which could cause bottlenecking. Just wondering if anyone knows whether this can be done with this nic. thank you

Live charts & price action on order matrix continues to fluctuate. When a price stop disappears after sliding it, price action can move right thru it's invisible location without kicking me out of the trade.Only to reappear 5-15 20 sec. later in it's repositioned slot.

We where having this issue on the dell latitude e6400 laptop. It was an issue with Sips mode which according to dell Intel has decided to turn on in its drivers.
This is how we fixed it:

Solution: Run Regedit.exe. Click on computer. From menu select edit/find. Search for SipsEnabled Change from 1 to 0. Press F3 to search for next until all are changed. Reboot
Im not sure if this with work for the 760/960 desktops but give it a try.

Thanks Pete. On the 960, with the MS 10.5.1.0 driver installed, the string "SipsEnabled" does not appear in the registry.

I still have several machines running 11.5.10.0 that also do not have SipsEnabled in the registry. I rolled back 2 computers to the driver shipped with Windows 7 and so far they look solid.

Hi,
could someone please post a link to the 10.5.1.0 driver or email it to me? I can only find the latest drivers or sites saying they have it yet they don't. It would be much appreciated.

If Win 7 just uninstall the new one from the control panel. Then the adapter will set itself up with the Win7 supplied.

If it's a Dell, you can go to the current driver, then click on Other Version. Here's the list for XP on the OptiPlex 960:
They don't show the 10.5.1.0, but there are versions before and after that one that might work.

Windows 7 x64 on a new HP 6000 here with the intel 82567LM-3 NIC chipset showing similar simptoms. Fixed IP/fixed DNS means no DHCP negotiation, but it's still slow on boot to get a connection which is causing problems getting authenticated on Samba shares. It's also periodically dropping my connection (bye-bye Samba until reboot!). The network icon in the lower right would show a yellow exclamation point, Windows thought it was connected to 'an unknown network', but IPCONFIG showed everything was OK and the NIC was clearly still there apparently in functional order. HOWEVER.... pinging to see if I was actually connected would work with maybe only dropping the first attempt, and I noticed as soon as I did that that the exclamation point would go away and all would appear 'healed'.
My stupid-despiration-kludge was to drop a bat file into my startup folder that continuously pings a server on our network. With it pinging away down in the task bar all day, all is well. I'm calling this "NIC narcolepsy" and sincerely hope my incredibly silly work around has a limited lifespan until the driver can be updated!

I had network speed issues on an Intel DQ45EK motherboard and a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop, both running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have the 82567LM NIC. Since the problems remained both at work and home with the Dell I deducted that the problem was with the card or drivers.
When updating the drivers for the DQ45EK I seem to have resolved all issues when upgrading the network driver to Intel version 10.1.6.0, which I downloaded from here: http://http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+4+Series+Chipset+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Desktop+Board+DQ45EK) http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+4+Series+Chipset+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Desktop+Board+DQ45EK
When that driver seemed ok for the motherboard NIC I tried it on the laptop too (blatantly disregarding the mention of "Desktop Boards" in the name, heh), and from what I can see everything is working fine now.

Hi Andre,
I can't find a download for Win7x64 that contains a driver with verion 10.1.6.0.
Can you confirm what the PNPID is for your NIC?
The one I've got is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10DE, which uses the e1k62x64 what is yours?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben
I'm at work now, so unfortunately I can't say what the device Id is for the DQ45EK desktop motherboard. On the Dell laptop I have pci\ven_8086&dev_10f5.
The driver version I quoted is also from the laptop. Unfortunately I won't be able to check the desktop untill I get home...
The driver was installed as part of the ""LAN: Intel® PRO Network Connections Driver for Intel® Desktop Boards for Windows 7" package that I downloaded and installed while trying to fix the problems with the DQ45EK. I tried linking directly to it in my previous post, but if that failed the package can be found when searching for drivers for DQ45EK and selecting the appropriate operating system.
Just now I noticed the download description that says it will install driver version 14.8, but that is not the driver version that was installed, since the "Driver assembly version" value is 10.1.6.0 on my computer after installation...
Regards
André
Edit:
Here is the some more info:
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10F5&SUBSYS_02331028&REV_03\3&18D45AA6&0&C8

My mistake, the problem still exists on my DQ45EK adapter...
I didn't notice earlier since the computer isn't in full use yet. The initial link has been 1Gb/s everytime I have rebooted, instead of 10Mb/s like it used to be before the driver update, but there was one disconnect and subsequent reconnect at 10Mb/s in the eventlog. Running the Intel PROSet Diagnostic hardware test disconnected the card from the network, and when it reconnected the speed was back up at Gigabit speed.
It might still be worth a try with that driver to see if it helps on your card, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be stable either.
Here is the info for that adapter:
Name [00000007] Intel(R) 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10DE&SUBSYS_10048086&REV_02\3&11583659&0&C8
Service Name e1kexpress
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\e1k62x64.sys (11.5.10.0, 287,17 KB (294 064 bytes), 10.12.2009 09:37)

I'm having the same issues as everyone else here on several newly purchased HP 6000 Pro Microtowers with the embedded 82567LM-3.
The towers came preinstalled with WinXP Pro SP3 and the 2008 drivers. The disconnects happened with the all drivers available at HP (2008-2010).
Luckily, I had 6 unused Belkin NICs laying around and installed those and disabled the Intels. Problem solved; but not a good solution for Intel.
