82579LM VLAN on Windows Server 2019

We're trying to get VLANs enabled on 82579LM NICs in Windows Server 2019.  Can you tell me how to enable a VLAN with this NIC?  If it's not possible, may I have a recommendation on which NICs sold by Intel currently support VLANs on Server 2019?

Things I think I understand:

  • VLAN GUI support has been removed
  • VLAN configuration should be done through PowerShell
  • Advanced Network Services has been replaced with Adapter Configuration Utility
  • There is "limited support" for 82579LM after Server 2012 R2

Commands I've tried and the responses:

  • Get-NetAdapter -Name * -IncludeHidden
    • Get-NetAdapter: The data is invalid.

  • Import-Module -Name 'C:\Program Files\Intel\Wired Networking\IntelNetCmdlets\IntelNetCmdlets'
  • Get-IntelNetAdapter
  • Add-IntelNetVLAN
    • Add-IntelNetVLAN: Advanced Network Services is not installed. Please re-run the software installation and select “Advanced Network Services” from the options list and try the command again.

Hello DMillage,

I understand. Let me share this link for the guide on how to create VLAN.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005677/ethernet-products.html

If you scroll down at the bottom of the page and click on show all at related products, you will see all the network cards capable for VLAN. However, let me add that you should check if the network card is supported by your system and OS. So you will need to check this with your OEM to avoid compatibility issues.

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Hello DMillage,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

For us to further check the issue, please provide the following details.

  1. Are you using onboard 82579LM or a PCIe card?
  2. What is the brand and model of your board/system?
  3. Can you give us more details about your system and setup?

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Hello Michael L,

Thank you for the welcome.

  1. The NIC is onboard.
  2. The systems are Dell Precision T3600 workstations.
  3. We have a subnet partitioned using 802.1Q.  The workstations are running Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have been tasked with updating the workstations to Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019 to extend their usage beyond the end of support for Windows Server 2012 R2 next year.  I ran a test upgrade to Windows Server 2019 of one system to determine what problems will be faced on the other units.

I was able to ask networking to disable 802.1Q on the port this unit is connected to while I finish the testing.  Disabling 802.1Q on all the ports is not a viable option at this time.

I was able to find newer PCI NICs from Intel for sale, but was unable to determine if they support VLANs.

Thank you,

Daniel

Hello DMillage,

Thank you for the quick reply. Let me gather more details regarding your setup.

  1. Can you share the link of the driver that you are using?
  2. Do you have screenshot of the issue?
  3. How did you install the network driver?

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Hi Michael,

I appreciate your assistance in this.

  1. I believe the current driver installed is PROSet 24.3, I made several attempts and my memory is cloudy
  2. As there is no GUI option for VLAN, I have attempted to perform the task via PowerShell.  I have attached a screenshot.
  3. The Intel PROSet drivers do not detect the NIC.  I have run "Update Driver" from the Windows GUI and scanned the PROSet directory.

Please forgive the delays in my replies.  Our corporate spam filter keeps catching the updates.

Thank you,

DMillage

Hello DMillage,

Thank you for the update. Let me recommend the following:

  1. Please try the latest driver in this link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19372/intel-network-adapter-driver-for-windows-server-2019.html
  2. And follow the steps in creating VLAN on this link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000022706/ethernet-products.html

Hello Mike,

Thank you for the suggestion.  I was out of the office on Friday and I'm working remotely today.  Let me give this a shot first thing in the morning Tuesday and I will report back my findings.

Much appreciated,

DMillage

Hello Michael,

  1. When attempting to use that driver I am told "The best drivers for your device are already installed."
  2. I am in the NIC Teaming interface.  The status is "Host unmanageable" and there are no adapters selectable under "Adapters and Interfaces."

What are my next steps?

Thank you,

DMillage

Hello DMillage,

Thank you for the update and trying our recommendation. At this point, it is best to contact Dell for further support since your network card is onboard and onboard network card is considered as an OEM unit. OEM manufacturer may have custom driver, software and firmware to enable all the feature of your network card.

Hello Michael,

I understand.  The systems are out of support from Dell.  May I have a recommendation for a current PCI Intel NIC that I can purchase that supports VLANs?  I've tried to do some research on my own, but the item descriptions don't provide that information.

Thanks,

DMillage
