E810 Series GRE v1 Drop Issue [NVM Version 4.0]

Hello,

We are using Intel E810 Series NIC in our SDN Network 2x25G or 2x100G. After swap NIC with E810.  Our customers facing PPTP and EOIP connection issues due to GRE Enhanced (V1).

We observed that when GRE v1 packets send to NIC, NIC drop packets immediately, they are not even reach to linux kernel.  Most probably due to checksum error in FW of NIC.

We saw same issue @ErnestoR's topic since 2021.

https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/E-810C-GRE-and-VLANs/td-p/1291754

At this topic problem was accepted and said that problem will be solved in 2022.

We are almost in 2023 and problem still continue with NVM Version 4 (Lastest FW at this date.)

Could we learn when it will be solved in 2022 ?

This is really big issue for us since the issue breaks net neutrality.

If there is bypass for FW checksum control, we can consider to use it.

Have a nice day.

Hi Ahmet,

not sure if it is feasible for you, but the only workaround we could find is to have the GRE packet embedded in two VLANs. In this way the whole driver packet processing breaks, and the packet is not dropped. There are a number of drawbacks, including the impossibility to split the incoming traffic into different queues. Or you could change NIC vendor.

Regards,

Ernesto

Hello ErnestoR,

So much thank you for this valuable trick, we will try it even it will break the server performance. Eventually Intel implement GREv1 and fix this bug.

Thank you again.
