E810-XXVDA2: Unable to get module info printed properly

Hello,

I have just received a bunch of E810-XXVDA2 NICs, performance wise they're working just great.

However, I have found myself in a bit of a problematic issue: I cannot get the SFP28 module info to be dumped in a human readable format.

  • Problematic output
# ethtool -m wan0

This lead me to think there is something at the driver or ethtool level that prevents formatting of the Optical module info to be done properly.

I'm running Ubuntu servers with 22.04 LTS and the following kernels/kmod/firmware versions:

# ethtool -i wan0
driver: ice

supports-test: yes
supports-eeprom-access: yes
supports-register-dump: yes
supports-priv-flags: yes

Would you happen to have any clue about what could cause this ?

Thank you for your help !

Hello mnet,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

For us to further check the issue, please provide the following details.

  1. Are you designing a board/system with embedded Intel chip?
  2. Or are you using a PCIe network card?
  3. Can you tell us more about your set up and why do you need this inquiry?

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Best regards,

Hello Mike,

I'm using PCIe network card, this setup runs on a few servers that will be deployed in a few places that are not easily accessible. In order to ease troubleshooting, we used to rely on the Optical Diagnostics capabilities of the SFP28 modules we use in order to spot potential problems and trigger preventive maintenance.

This used to work just fine with other NIC brands, we are evaluating alternative NICs (to not have all eggs in the same basket) and found out this problem that we can only reproduce on this NIC type.

As mentioned above, we have tried multiple optics on the NIC with always the same result. We have also tried these same optics with a different NIC and the Optical Diagnostics are reported just fine.

Thank you for your help !

Hello mnet,

Thank you for the quick reply. Please provide the following information for us to further assist you.

  1. Kindly send photos of the network card on both sides for us to validate if the card is not an OEM unit.
  2. Please provide the link of the driver that you are using.
  3. Kindly generate the ssu log of your system for us to check the system configuration. Kindly download the utility below:
