I217-V / VLAN / BSOD "Bad Pool Caller"

L.S.

In my latest laptop (HP 650G1, feb-2015) running windows 8.1-64, my lan card is an Intel I217-V.

After installing the proset software, I should be able to configure VLAN's. I did this on my previous laptop once in a while to check VLAN configurations. Great function.

On this latest laptop, trying to configure VLAN's almost alway's results in a BSOD with the message "BAD POOL CALLER"

Since then I did the following:

- update drivers

- full uninstall / reboot / install of intel Proset

- manual cleanup of the registry, (There appear to get one or more ians miniport devices that get stuck in my device manager). Specially HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlset\Enum\ROOT\IANSMINIPORT

(Tricky to clean up. Use psexec -i -s regedt32.exe to get permission, then regdelnull to clean up data, then able to remove)

But even after full clean-up after uninstall / reboot / install / reboot does not appear to solve the issue.

Any help apreciated.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for contacting Intel.

Please try to install the driver provided by HP*. Please find the driver download website below:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5405142&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4158 http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5405142&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4158

*This link will take you off of the Intel website. Intel does not control the content of the destination website.

You may also check for driver updates for the other components in your laptop.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Sandy

Hello Sandy,

Thanks for your time. I normally use the integrator delivered drivers, and tried again. But these are base drivers, 12.12.80.19 and do not give me VLAN support. On the HP site, I can't find ProSet to add VLAN support. That is why I switched to Intel drivers. They work perfectly, as long as I don't use VLAN support :-(

Any additional suggestions?

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

What was the version of Intel Driver that you've tried?

Hello Sandy,

Been a bit busy. In the mean-time, I updated to Windows-10, but back now on this problem.

By default, W_10 install's a microsoft driver. Fine, but no VLAN's.

So I looked for an intel driver. I found the Intel ProWinx64.exe, version 20.3. I think the last one was 20.1. So I tried again.

Install was fine, bij as soon as I confgure a VLAN, I again receive an BAD_POOL_CALLER BSOD.

From the eventlog I get a bug-check 1001:

De computer is opnieuw opgestart na een bugcontrole. De bugcontrole is 0x000000c2 (0x0000000000000007, 0x0000000000001254, 0x0000000000000000, 0xffffe000adda455c). Er is een dump opgeslagen in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\100415-9234-01.dmp. Rapport-id: 100415-9234-01.

Hope this helps.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the update. Upon further checking, it appears that Windows* 10 doesn't support VLAN yet. We are currently waiting for Microsoft* to release the fix.

Sincerely,

Sandy

Hello Sandy,

Thanks again for your time but I'm a little puzzled by your answer.

So you are telling me that Microsoft broke things after Windows 7, and it is still not fixed in Windows 10?

But, if I understand correctly, the intel PRO-Set was designed to add networkfunctionality that is not available in Windows, like VLAN and teaming support. When installed, and when you configure VLAN's, what happens is this:

- the real network-card get's disconnected from windows, and is managed by iANS

- iANS create's multiple virtual network cards, one for each VLAN confugired in iANS, and exposes them to windows (like adding a hotplug, USB network card)

Window's doesn't know anything about VLAN's and doesn't have to. This is managed bij iANS. I just get extra networkcards in Windows.

But somehow, this stopped working for me. (Given time, I could try a windows 7 install on this hardware and see the results).

Still hoping and wating for a solution

Hi Thomas,

The VLAN feature would also need support from the operating system. Yes, you may try to install it on Windows* 7.

We look forward to you test results.

Sincerely,

Sandy

I recently upgraded my wife's PC, so I've got a spare SSD now. Windows 7, intel proset 20.3, working.

Upgraded to windows 10, downloading intel proset again, and....

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25249 Download Network Adapter Driver for Windows® 10

Important Note: Creating Intel® ANS teams and VLANs on Windows® 10 is currently not supported. As a result, when created, teams and VLANs do not pass traffic. We expect that ANS will be supported on Windows 10 client in a future release.

This same message is not in the windows 8.1 download

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25237 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25237

although I had the same problems, BAD_POOL_CALLER.

I'm afraid I have to wait this one out, and have a small managed switch at hand in case of VLAN troubles. Too bad. I don't think I'm going back to 7 though.

Hi Thomas,

On Windows* 8.1, please try to use the older drivers - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25237/Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-8-1- 20.2 or earlier.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Sandy
