Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network device issues

Dear.

I have recently bought the new sandy bridge core i5 machine and been trying to install Win SBS 2008, but during the process, it asked me for the driver for the ethernet adaptor. I cannot find any whatever online or the driver CD. Can anyone help me to locate a Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network driver for Win SBS 2008 please?

Thanks a lot

This is actually a dirty trick by Intel; someone has decided they don't want us installing server operating systems on desktop motherboards.

There is however a very easy fix for this; all Intel have done is add a few comments to the driver .inf to stop server operating systems picking up desktop motherboard ethernet controllers.

First thing to do is download http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20074/eng/V16_3_CD.zip http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20074/eng/V16_3_CD.zip which is the full driver set for all Intel ethernet controllers; extract this to a handy location.

Once done navigate to the PRO1000 folder; depending on whether you have a 32bit or 64bit OS you will then want either Win32 or Winx64(not Win64 which is for Itanium).

The choice for the next folder will depend on your OS; NDIS5x is Server2003 or XP, NDIS61 is Server2008 or Vista, NDIS62 is Server2008R2 or 7

In either case once you have chosen the correct folder you need to find the .inf starting e1c ; so for Server2008 64bit it will be called e1c60x64.inf

The part we need to change is below:

; e1c51x64.INF (Intel 64 bit extension Platform Only,

; Windows XP 64 bit extension and Windows Server 2003 64 bit extension)

;

; Intel(R) Gigabit Network connections

;******************************************************************************

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_00011179

What needs changing first is the [ControlFlags] section, I remove all 3 lines but leave the section header so all it should say is [ControlFlags] and then go on to the [Intel] section.

Next look at the [Intel] section, the [Intel.NTamd64.5.2] relates to Server 2008 and the [Intel.NTamd64.5.2.1] section to Vista; you can see that the E1503 lines are missing from the server section, simply copy/paste those two lines, you should end up with and [Intel] section looking like:

[Intel]

[Intel.NTamd64.5.2]

; DisplayName Section DeviceID

; ----------- ------- --------

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_00011179

[Intel.NTamd64.5.2.1]

; DisplayName Section DeviceID

; ----------- ------- --------

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_00011179

Save the inf file and you should then find the driver will install perfectly.

Hope this helps

You sir... are a good man. Works like a charm, I needed this to setup a Hyper-V lab at home. The computer was fairly cheap and supported 32GB RAM making this ideal. When the drivers did not install, I had just hoped maybe someone had a fix and you found it.

Thanks very much simon,

it was very helpful for me.

I have been trying to solve this problem for 6 months. but now it's solved.

I downloaded from gateway the driver for LAN card for windows 7 professional and I have

done the steps you've mentioned and it finally worked.

there is a little difference, instead of file e1c60x64.inf we find a file e1c62x64.inf

and instead of adding 2 lines we will add just one line because in this version there is just

one line missing

Thanks for your help

Hi Simon

The suggested link, http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20074/eng/V16_3_CD.zip http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20074/eng/V16_3_CD.zip, does not exist anymore. Can you please specify another link for the download?

The problem that I am having with my network adapter, is that when I turn on my pc my network does not work. When troubleshooting, the following result is obtained.

When I restart my pc (through windows), everything works fine. However, I experience a lot of crashes when working on a network. I have updated my network driver but does not help.

Can you assist please

Thanks

Jacques

Hi Jacques

Unless you are running a Server operating system on a desktop motherboard your issue is unrelated to the problem in this post.

The latest Intel driver CD can be downloaded here http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20621/eng/V16_7_CD.zip http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20621/eng/V16_7_CD.zip

assuming your network adapter is integrated into the motherboard then I would look at any BIOS upgrades for the motherboard; you don't give any details of the system, if the motherboard is 4-5 years old then have a look at the capacitors and check that none are bulging/leaking as that can cause random problem like yours and is a precursor to the motherboard failing.

Hi Simon,

I have a similar problem as I just bought a computer from Quietpc with this board Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H and although I have not confirmation from any source I suspect it has a network controller for desktop only OS.

I want to run Windows Server 2012 R2 and would like to know which NDIS directory I should look for, the NDIS63 or NDIS64.

I have downloaded the CD version of Intel network adapters, and I will be looking into PRO1000 folder. Is this the right place for this board?

Thank you for your very helpful support.

Regards

ZEM

Hi, regarding your post

I am attempting to apply your solution to the case of Windows Home Server 2011 to an Intel desktop board with the 82579.

Can you tell me the appropriate lines to add into the inf file, name of file and name of the folder /sub folders it should be in.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris

Home Server 2011 is based on Server 2008 so the solution I described should work fine; updating to the current version(17.1) you should download http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18720/eng/PROWinx64.exe http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18720/eng/PROWinx64.exe and extract with a suitable zip program.

Navigate to PROWinx64\PRO1000\Winx64\NDIS62 and find e1c62x64.inf when you look in the file you can see that all Intel have done is alter the Server2008 section such that certain network chipsets don't get detected:

[ControlFlags]

ExcludeFromSelect = \

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502,\

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503

[Intel]

[Intel.NTamd64.6.1.1]

; DisplayName Section DeviceID

; ----------- ------- --------

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00021179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_80001025

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_00021179

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_80001025

%E1503NC.DeviceDesc% = E1503.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_04911025

[Intel.NTamd64.6.1]

; DisplayName Section DeviceID

; ----------- ------- --------

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00021179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_80001025

What I do above is remove everything from the [ControlFlags] section but leave the header; then you need to look at the next section down, the device you have is in the E1503 section which you can see is missing from the [Intel.NTamd64.6.1] section.

All you need to is copy the 6 lines with E1503 in from the [Intel.NTamd64.6.1.1] section; you should end up with:

[ControlFlags]

[Intel]

[Intel.NTamd64.6.1.1]

; DisplayName Section DeviceID

; ----------- ------- --------

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00011179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_00021179

%E1502NC.DeviceDesc% = E1502.6.1.1, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1502&SUBSYS_80001025

Simon, you are a genius. Truly Intel has tried to defeat our abilities to install Server OS's on Desktop boards. I was able to use your edits to install LAN drivers for Windows Server 2008 x32, not R2, just regular Win2008, on an Intel DH77EB motherboard with a 82579V gig lan adapter. Now there is one more thing left. I have a "PCI Simple Communcations Controller" it needs a driver too. Can you recommend a .INF file edit for this one?

Hey Simon,

Have you got any tricks up your sleeve to modify the inf file to install server 2012? I have looked at a few and have put several hours of work into this - it's rather ridiculous. Gigabyte said this:

Dear customer,

Basically Z87X-UD3H was work station system designed there has no LAN driver for Server 2012 available, User may need to search on Intel website if Intel i217V LAN chip driver for Server 2008 available or user may need to disable onboard LAN device in mother board bios insert a PCIE LAN card which is Server 2008 compatible to work around

If you know a fix in the inf file that would be great, if you don't, can you give me the advise on hardware to utilize? I believe that I would actually be looking to copy the driver for windows 8 into the section for server 2012, but I may be mistaken and I do not know much about the coding of drivers.

Hi Simon,

Many thanks for your post there!

This helped me get the Network Drivers working for Windows Server 2008 R2 on an ASUS P9X79 Motherboard.

Only difference was that I downloaded the latest driver, navigated to PROWinx64\PRO1000\Winx64\NDIS62 and edited correct file, rather than downloading all the intel drivers.

Hi Simon

I'm trying to use an Intel Ethernet controller (82567LM) on W2K3 in a lab. Unfortunately the changes do not work when done in e1y6032.inf as you suggest. Is there something different I need to do?

Thanks in advance
