Intel X710-DA2 Finisar Base-T SFP modules compatibility?

Hello,

According to Intel® Ethernet Controller X710/

XXV710/XL710 Feature Support

Matrix (Revision 3.4 November 2019 332191-024,

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/release-notes/xl710-ethernet-controller-feature-matrix.pdf ):

"Table 2. Supported Media Types for X710/XL710

...

SFP 1GBASE-T Transceiver (single speed) (9,10)

...

9. Support limited to: Finisar FCLF-8521-3, Kinnex A XSFP-T-RJ12-0101-DLL, Avago ABCU-5710RZ.

10.Finisar FCLF8521P2BTL is described to be functionally equivalent to Finisar FCLF-8521-3."

So, I take it as FCLF8521P2BTL is supported on X710.

But when plugging such module into X710-DA2 (fw ver. 7.1), I am getting "Rx/Tx is disabled on this device because an unsupported SFP module type was detected."

Tested with Ubuntu 18.04, driver 2.1.14k and 2.10.19.30, also with ESXi 6.7 U3

So, what about FCLF8521P2BTL support, keeping in mind that FCLF-8521-3 is, as far as I know, out of production?

Hello JStef3,

Upon further checking the provided picture, we found several inconsistencies such as no YottaMark sticker and mismatched manufacture date on the labels. Because of this, I am sorry to inform you that we're not able to confirm if the adapter is from Intel. This could be the reason that it recognizes the unsupported module.

Here are some of the links that can also help you check the cards.

YottaMark sticker:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007074/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products.html

Product label description:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007060/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products.html

If you have questions, please let us know. If there is no update form you, I will make another follow up after 3 business days.

Hello JStef3,

Thank you for patiently waiting.

Upon checking, "Feature Support Matrix" is for the controllers.

Other brands of SFP+ optical modules don't work with the Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter (Intel® Ethernet CNA) X710 Series. You need to use the listed Intel® SFP+ SR or LR Optics in the site below:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007045/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products.html

If you have questions, please let us know.

Thank you for your answer, but... situation is still messy for me:

What is the difference between:

- Ethernet Server Adapter X710 Series

- Ethernet Converged Network Adapter (Intel® Ethernet CNA) X710 Series

- Intel® Ethernet Controller X710

? All these names are mentioned in different documents in the same context.

-----

" What SFP+ and SFP modules are supported?

Intel® Ethernet SFP+ SR Optics and Intel® Ethernet SFP+ LR Optics are the only 10-Gbps optical modules supported. You can purchase these modules separately.

You can't use other brands of SFP+ (10 Gbps) modules with these adapters."

"Can I mix different SFP module types and cables on a dual port adapter from the Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 Series?

Yes, you can install any mix of supported SFP+ optical modules, SFP modules or direct attach cables on the same dual or quad port adapter..."

------

I am not talking about 10Gb modules and even not about SFP+ modules - only about specific SFP (not "+") 1Gb copper module.

Maybe SFP modules are not supported at all? Ok, but why to mention them in documents then?

Where is the clear statement: "SFP modules are not supported on <product name>"?

And if even so - why Finisar FCLF-8521-3 works with X710-DA4? (we have one such setup)

Ok, looks like I have found a difference between working DA4 and not working DA2:

This is lspci output for X710-DA4:

02:00.0 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r02 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710-4 [0004]"

02:00.1 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r02 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 [0000]"

02:00.2 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r02 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 [0000]"

02:00.3 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r02 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 [0000]"

and this is output for X710-DA2:

04:00.0 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r01 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710-2 [0008]"

04:00.1 "Ethernet controller [0200]" "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Controller X710 for 10GbE SFP+ [1572]" -r01 "Intel Corporation [8086]" "Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 [0000]"

According to PCI device and vendor ID's these are pure-blood Intel X710 cards, but with one small difference - DA4 revision is "02" and DA2 revision is "01"

Tested DA4 with Dell branded FCLF8521P2BTL ( DELL SFP-1G-T FCLF8521P2BTL-DL, DP/N: 0XTY28) - it is OK, it is working.

It does not work with DA2.

I have found this document:

"Intel® Ethernet Controller X710/

XXV710/XL710

Specification Update

Ethernet Networking Division (ND)

October 2019"

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=2ahUKEwiC5OuGxoDnAhVhxIsKHTg8AmkQFjAAegQIBBAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.intel.com%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fwww%2Fpublic%2Fus%2Fen%2Fdocuments%2Fspecification-updates%2Fxl710-10-40-controller-spec-update.pdf&usg=AOvVaw27anCuRwRX25h8Dg3epgoy

which tell me:

"11. PCI Revision ID Update for B1 Stepping

...

The resulting Revision ID in PCIe config space is 0x2 for B1 silicon. It was 0x1 for B0."

So...

How fundamental is difference between rev01 and rev02?

Is it possible to "upgrade" (firmware?) rev01 to rev02, or rev01 is rev01 and we have to replace cards?

How we can distinguish cards with different revisions without putting them into server and reading IDs from device?

( and how to find such information without buying card, trying to start it, pulling out hair and ending with massive google-fu ? :) )

Working  DA4 photos attached.

Hello JStef3,

Regarding all of your questions, I need to collect them and provide an answer in one post. Including the one from your previous post so please give me 1 to 2 days to update you on this.

By the way, I just want to check if our main issue which is the cable comp ability, is it working fine now?

Hello JStef3,

Regarding the revision, you can base the revision on the PBA number of the card. And uf you want to know the changes made on different revisions, please look for the PCN or Product change notifications on the link below. Adjust the date and search for the model of your NIC.

Hello JStef3,

This post is to answer your question about different name under X710 Series.

Upon checking, the difference between Ethernet controller and Ethernet Server or Ethernet Converged adapter. Ethernet controller is a chip integrated to the board while Ethernet Server or Ethernet Converged adapter is a discreet card.

If you have questions, please let us know.

Oh... to be honest, questions are the same, plus

What is difference between X710DA2G1P5 and X710DA2G2P5 ?

Where I can read previous versions of "Intel® Ethernet Controller X710/XXV710/XL710 Feature Support Matrix"? Not the last one, 3.4, but initial ones - 1.0, 1.1., 1.2?

I have a strong feeling that these DA2 are from very early production batches. Date of manufacture is December 2014, when X710DA2 itself was launched at Q4 2014

I am still unable to find older versions of "Intel® Ethernet Controller X710/XXV710/XL710 Feature Support Matrix". :/ Probably I am not clever enough to use this "QDMS Search PCN Database" in the right way.

Maybe you can just take them from Secret Intel Archive and post here or send to me by email? Ver. 1.0 September, 24 2014 and Ver. 1.3 August 26, 2015, for example...

Hello JStef3,

You can just use the model of the product to search the different revisions. And also, this is a public site, if there are files are not available publicly, it may require Customer Non-Disclosure Agreement or CNDA.

If you have questions, please let us know.
