PC freezes after BIOS with Intel E810-XXVDA2

I want to upgrade my Lenovo P360 Ultra (12700 with W680 Chipset) with a Intel E810-XXVDA2 network card. With the card installed the PC freezes after the bios before booting any OS. Numlock does not change and even the integrated hardware tool does not start. I don't think it gets to starting the os but neither Windows or Linux from SSD start. Same with a live linux from USB.

It does not work neither in PCIe 4.0 16x slot nor the PCIe 3.0x 4x slot. An Asus XG-C100F works in both slots.

The Intel card also works in an PCIe 4.0 4x slot of my desktop computer (13700K with Z790).

Firmware of all components are up to date.

I found a similiar issue here:

Hi @Bartman,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

We appreciate your help for sharing relevant thread, the case was later referred to system manufacturer to rectify the compatibility issue between the NIC and system.

Kindly provide the following information for us to check on your query.

1.) System Support Utility(SSU) log of your system. This will allow us to check your Adapter details and configuration. This would also help us identify if you are using an OEM or retail version of Intel Ethernet Adapter. Kindly refer to the steps below.

a- Go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-?product=91600 and download the software.

b- Open SSU.exe

c- Mark the box "Everything" and then click "Scan".

d- When finished scanning, click "Next".

e- Click on "Save" and attach the file to a post.

2.) May I seek your help for a photo of the markings of the E810-XXVDA2 both front and back so we can validate your adapter. Please refer to the link below.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007022/ethernet-products/500-series-network-adapters-up-to-10gbe.html

3.) We also wish to isolate the issue and refer to this windows* support for Intel® Ethernet 800 Series Network Adapters:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000025890/ethernet-products.html

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

1) The system does not boot an OS at all with the card installad.

2) The link you posted is for the 500 Series and the stickers look different on my 800 Series card. There is a sticker to https://verifyintel.bradyid.com/  The number checks out as Legitimate Code. PBA Number K57775-013

I was also able update the firmware to v4.20 with the intel tool.

3) What the purpose of the link? I plan to use Linux with the card but there is no sign of any OS starting. Why aren't the driver on Windows Update if Windows 11 is officially supported?

Hi @Bartman,

We apologise if our instructions were unclear.

We understand that the system unable to boot past the bios screen.

1) The System Support Utility(SSU) log has some function to displays a list of all Network Adapters on your system. These Network Adapters include all wired and wireless connections.

Based on the general public specification of Lenovo P360 Ultra:

https://thinkstation-specs.com/thinkstation/p360-ultra/#section4_intel%C2%AEethernetspecifications

It has Controller Bus Architecture: PCIe 2.1 (5GT/s) and default configuration of Intel I350-T2 Dual Port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter which support 5 GT/s x 4 Lane.

As you may aware, the system has PCIe 4.0 x16 & PCIe 3.0 x8 (x4 Lanes) and Intel® Ethernet Network Adapter E810-XXVDA2 support 16 GT/s x8 lanes and compatible with PCIe 4.0 (16 GT/s)

Generally, when using the maximum number of supported SSDs on the platform the PCIe x16 slot may bifurcate down to x8 capability.

This place is where I think the problem originated. Lenovo, who sells motherboards, is who I would advise.

2) According to the part number: K57775-013, it is a retail Intel® Ethernet Network Adapter E810-XXVDA2.

You will generally need the latest driver and firmware (which you have done earlier):

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/189760/intel-ethernet-network-adapter-e810xxvda2/downloads.html

3) The purpose of the link is cross check regarding to supported Operating Systems for Retail Intel® Ethernet Adapters.

Having stated that and based on the thread, you tested Intel® Ethernet Network Adapter E810-XXVDA2 with your desktop computer without any problems and had the most recent drive. The problem is frequently caused by item 1) (compatibility configuration).

Same issue with an X710 adapter.

Lenovo support is absolutly reluctant to look into the issue.

They only look in the list with "supported" ethernet adaptes. The list contains three gigabit ethernet adapters and one RJ45 10G adapter and thats it. What are standards for. Never had such issues with DIY solutions.

Lenovo confirms the issue with an Intel XXV710-DA2 25/10/1GbE SFP28. X710-DA2 10/1GbE SFP+ apparantly works for them. They didn't have access to an E810 card.

Isn't the majority of that Code controlling and initialising the devices bei UEFI from Intel? I was under the impression the OEM more less decides which parameters can be controlled with UEFI Settings and which are fixed values.

Are there test with the W680 chipset and intel ethernet controllers?
