Hi gar\yeohchux,

Thank you for contacting Intel.

The operating temperature of Intel® Ethernet QSFP+ Optics is 0 to 70°C. However, there's no operating temperature for cable since it doesn't have operating components in it.

Please refer to Product Briefs on the links below:

1. http://www.intel.ph/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/ethernet-qsfp-optics-brief.pdf Intel® Ethernet QSFP+ Optics

2. http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/ethernet-qsfp-cables-brief.pdf Intel® Ethernet QSFP+ Cables

Please let us know if you have other inquiries.

Sincerely,

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

Do you know why there is no stated operating temperature for Intel Ethernet QSFP+ breakout cable under Product briefs?

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ethernet-products/optics-cables/ethernet-qsfp-cables-brief.html Intel® Ethernet QSFP+ Cables Product Brief

I saw Intel Ethernet SFP+ Twinaxial Cable Product briefs listed Electrical/Cables Characteristics or Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Optic Product briefs listed Optical Characteristics SR4, why there is no listed for Intel Ethernet QSFP+ cable Product briefs?

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for writing back.

The breakout cable didn't have operating temperature is because it doesn't have any components that is operating in it.

Sincerely,

Hi Sandy,

Follow up questions.

So the QSFP+ twinaxial cables and breakout cables do not comply to the commercial temperature range of 0-70C and do not have operating temperatures?

If so, why is there a need for the heatsink on the QSFP+ connector on the OCP board?

Regards,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

In order to further verify your inquiry, can you please provide further information, a photo maybe. of the heat sink you are referring to. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hi Sandy,

I am attaching picture for you as reference. This is the heasink customer mention on it.

What purpose attached heatsink for the QSFP+ connector?

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

The heatsink are there to prevent the part from overheating since it is attached to the card.

Hi Sandy,

Is there any issue or impact if without heatsink attached above QSFP+ connector?

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your reply. The connector will experience overheating without the heatsink.

Hi Sandy,

Customer mentioned that "The heatsink for purpose to prevent the part from overheating since it is attached to the adapter card".

So this statement is only applicable for the Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Optics since it has an operating temperature?

If we do not have the heatsink, it should not be a concern for the Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Twinaxial cable and the Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Breakout cable?

Regards,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Yes, it should not be a concern if the twinaxial and breakout cables are going to have heatsink or not. If heatsink is needed, it would already be built-in to the connectors of these cables.

Hi Sandy,

Customer questions again.

The Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Optics does not have a heatsink on board even though it has an operating temperature of 0-70C. It would be using the heatsink that is on the QSFP+ connector on the Fisher Flat.

I believe there should be an operating temperature specification even for the Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Twinaxial cable and the Intel Ethernet QSFP+ Breakout cable if they are to comply to the SFF-8436 specification.

Regards,

Patrick
