Why took auto-negotiation with Intel network adapters much longer as with Realtek network adapters?

Hello,

I have a request for auto-negotiation.

Problem: Intel Ethernet take too long to auto-negotiate.

Short explanation:

At the Gigabit switch and at the computer auto-negotiation is switched on.

Two different RJ45 inserts are possible for the wall socket in the office.

Wall socket with one port that uses all eight wires of the cat7 cable = 1x 1000 MBit.

Or wall socket with two ports, each using four wires of the cat7 cable = 2x 100 MBit.

Everything is fine with the Gigabit connection.

But at a 100 MBit connection the following problem occurs:

Computer with Intel network adapter needs 19 seconds until a network connection is established.

Computer with Realtek network adapter needs only 4 seconds.

Due to the long waiting time, start scripts for Windows are not executed.

******************************************************************************

Detailed explanation:

In our corporate network we have either a full Gigabit connection or a split Gigabit connection which becomes two 100 MBit connections.

Depending on which insert is in the wall socket, the complete wires of the cat7 cable (1x 1000 MBit) or half each (2x 100 Mbit) are used.

Now we had to find out that auto-negotiation for computers with Intel network connections takes much longer to negotiate than for computers with Realtek network connections.

These problems only occur with split network sockets, i.e. at 100 MBit. With Gigabit everything is fine.

If a computer with an Intel port is connected to a 100 MBit port, it takes about 19 seconds after booting under Win10 until the red X disappears from the network icon at the bottom right of the login screen and a connection is displayed.

The Realtek connection takes only 4 seconds.

The driver settings for all adapters are set to default, as far as I could see the network adapter options are identical for the comparable settings.

Tested devices:

OS: Win10 X64 Pro

(All devices have been reinstalled)

Switch: HP A5120 Series Switch JE068A

HP ProBook 650 G2

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V

Version 12.17.10.6

(Even the latest version from 2019 has been tested 12.18.8.9)

Toshiba Tecra R950-194

Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection

Version 12.15.31.4

The Realtek network port is located on an ASUS B85M-E motherboard.

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

Version 10.3.723.2015

The problems also occur with other devices, which I cannot name at the moment, but always the same. Realtek much faster than Intel.

The whole thing causes problems when executing start scripts which are executed before Windows logon. Due to the long reaction time they are not executed with Intel connections.

As soon as you set the value in the network driver to 100 Duplex it works without problems.

However, this cannot remain permanently set due to the number of devices and constant office changes. Auto-negotiation must remain.

It is not due to old or too long cables.

The whole thing is very strange and presents us with big problems.

Do you have any idea why?

Thank you

Hello 3000021172281.5514663223918699E12, Thank you for waiting on our update. Just to double check if the link speed of I219 and the switch are configured to the same setting, please ensure both are set to 100mbps speed or both at auto-negotiation mode. You mentioned that the problem also occur with other devices, may we know if those devices also uses Intel Ethernet Connection? Let us know if you have any other questions. Hello Crisselle C,

all switch ports and device ports are set to auto-negotiation.

The same problems with:

Toshiba Tecra R950-194

Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection

Version 12.15.31.4

HP ProDesk 600 G1

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-LM

12.12.80.1920

HP ProDesk 600 G2

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-LM

12.13.17.4

HP ElitePro 820 G3

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V

12.18.8.9

On Win7 x64 and Win10 x64.

I don't know why the Realtek driver architecture negotiate in our case quicker, recognise the 100 Mbit connection faster.

At first we thougt it has to do with the HP motherboards. Compared to MSI, GIGABYTE or ASUS motherboards, HP offers only the most necessary settings. Do not make a good impression.

But the same problem appeared on a Toshiba device. After that I noticed all of this HP and Toshiba devices have one thing in common Intel Ethernet.

Other PCs in our company with MSI, GIGABYTE, ASUS motherboards have Realtek Ethernet and work fine.

The problem, the most are HP devices.

I dont think you can help in this case.

The most things you ask, are things I already answered in my first post.

It seems this problem is to special to find a solution on this way.

Hello 3000021172281.5514663223918699E12, Thank you for the reply. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. I managed to check on HP website and found the latest i219-V driver available is 12.17.10.7 dated Jul 3, 2018, have you tried using this driver version already? As I can see the driver version in the SSU log is 12.17.10.6. This would be helpful for us to further investigate and have you tried checking with HP* if they have any similar issue you've encountered. https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-probook-650-g2-notebook-pc/8430739 (This link will bring you to a third party website, owned and operated by an independent party over which Intel has no control.
