how to understand GLV_RDPC and GLPRT_RDPC register in X710 datasheet?

In x710 datasheet, the description of the registers as followed:

  • GLPRT_RDPC (Port Receive Packets Discarded Count): Counts received packets from the network that are dropped in the receive packet buffer. The packets are dropped due to possible lack of bandwidth on the PCIe or total bandwidth of the internal data path.
  • GLV_RDPC (VSI Received Discard Packet Count): Counts (per VSI) packets that were dropped due to no descriptors in host queue. 

How to understand the behavior of the GLV_RDPC?  Whether the nic discard the packets in the fifo when the rx queue has no available descriptors, or the nic discard the packets on the line when the fifo is full due to no available descriptors in the rx queue?

 

What does the GLRPT_RDPC mean? Does the GLPRT_RDPC increase because the nic's fifo is full but there are still available descriptors in the rx queue? 

 

Does the receive packet buffer in the GLPRT_DPRC description refer to the nic's fifo buffer?
