i218-LM "this device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I have a problem very similar or identical to that experienced by nh29 here

Since purchasing my Let's Note laptop PC CF-LX3 I have been unable to connect to wired land only wifi.

I eventually got around to having a look in the device manager (I had thought that the problem must be mine since I had the problem from new)

In the device manager the driver for my Ethernet Chip has the yellow triangle and exclamation mark.

i am told that I have a can't start due to Code 10.

I have tried installing your latest drivers from your site

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23071 Download Intel® Network Adapter Driver for Windows 8.1*

and installing them by first extracting them using 7-Zip and browsing to the 64 bit drivers using the method described on reddit here

https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/3604oj/ethernet_driver_issue/ ethernet driver issue : techsupport

I also tried letting the Device manage find drivers on the Internet (which told me that I had the most up to date drivers installed)

Add I also downloaded the Win81_64_d135311 file from my computer manufacturers site here in Japan

http://askpc.panasonic.co.jp/s/download/install/lx3_e_x.html Let's note CF-LX3シリーズ 導入済みドライバー | パナソニック パソコンサポート

In all cases I am told that the driver installed but the the device can not be started

the driver was installed but

"this device cannot start. (Code 10)"

In all cases I uninstalled and deleted the previous drivers first.

Like nh29 I have a degree in electronic engineering (thought I am not chartered) .

On nh29's thread it was suggested that this has something to do with the Ultra Low Power settings. I am not sure how to turn these off. You send a tool to nh29 apparently after which he did not respond to the thread above so perhaps that cured things for him.

I see that in the Power Plan settings there are Intel CPPC Energy Efficient Optimization but in both they are now set to Plugged in Disabled, and Aggressiveness when plugged in at 0%

(I could have sworn that earlier today these settings were different! Perhaps one of the more recent drivers that I installed changed the settings).

My system is Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit Japanese (GUI language English)

The device manager says

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}

The requested operation was unsuccessful.

In the advanced settings

Wake on Link is Off

and (aha) "Low power Ethernet" was on. I set it to off and disabled, then re-enabled the device but it still says Code 10.

The other thing that surprises me is that under driver details the files are in the Windows sub folder "System32" is that as it should be?

C\windows\system32\Drivers\e1d64x64.sys

and the following three files in the same location

e1dmsg.dll

NicCo36.dll (this is the oldest file in system32)

NicINstD.dll

According to the page below the first file e1d64x64.sys is an Intel "Gigabit" driver (sounds right)

http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/e1d64x64-sys/21427853 What is e1d64x64.sys from Intel Corporation? (id:21427853)

And the version number of the driver in my Device manager is the same as that mentioned on the page above

12.9.16.0

I thought I would try and older driver.

In Device Manager properties I uninstalled and deleted the driver.

I then downloaded this driver

Network_Driver_VCNY8_WN_19.0.1.0_A08

Mentioned in this thread

I then clicked on check for new hardware and install driver and browsed to the folder where I had downloaded the above driver.

I was told that I had aldready installed the best driver (i.e. it seem to ingore my request to install the above driver

DESPITE the fact that I had instructed my PC to delete the driver. )

This I also note that driver I am using is Dated 02/07/2013 which is a long time ago and a lot older than most of the drivers

that I have been attempting to install.

I am now trying let me choose the driver from a list. There are two drivers in the list both Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I218-LM

I tried both of the two drivers and both result in the same message on the Update Driver Software dialogue

Windows found driver software for your device buy encountered an error while attempting to install it

This device cannot start (Code 10).

Installing the top one of the two drivers in the list gives the above date

Driver Date 02/07/2013 version 12.9.16.0

whereas the second in the list gives this

Driver date says 28/03/2013 12.6.47.1

They all seem very old.

Despite flipping between the two of these drivers, the "Roll Back Driver" option is not displayed (it is greyed out).

Now driver details only shows one file, the first of those mentioned in my original post.

I also tried installing the oldest driver availabel on the Intel site at

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23098/Intel-Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-8-1- Download Intel® Network Adapter Driver for Windows 8.1*

I extracted the driver using 7-Zip to a folder. Deleted the current driver. Checked for hardware modifications. Found Ethernet card, selected install driver, browse to folder and browsed to the folder where I had downloaded the above old driver and I get the same message Driver installed but cannot be started and again I am only at a Driver date of 02/07/2013 which is still older than the date of the oldest driver above 8/6/2013.

Could it be that the fact that the device can not be started prevents any new drivers from being installed? After all it says "attempting to install it"

This is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I may need a driver update to get the device to start, but I need to get the device to start before I can install a new driver.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for the post. I would like to clarify if Windows 8.1 is the original operating system installed on your Let's Note laptop PC CF-LX3 ?

I understand you also tried downloading the driver from your notebook vendor. It is recommended you contact the notebook vendor as I understand this is a Panasonic laptop for them to best assist you with customized driver for the onboard NIC

Dear WB

intel_admin

I am not sure if Windows 8.1 was pre-installed. It may have been 8.0 with a subsequent routine Windows update.

It seems clear that this "Code 10" issue is being experienced by many users of the I218 LM on a variety of different hardware, as mentioned on these forums and many other places on the Internet, so it seems to me that the Intel Community forum is an appropriate place to address it, and beg other users for their advice.

Additionally, while it has not worked from the get go, my lap-top is now out of warranty and Japanese support services tend to me expensive, and in Japanese.

I look forward to your generous provision of a ULP tweaking tool and hope that will allow me to update the driver.

Dear WB

I responded to your private message a few days ago with my email address.

Will you be so kind as to send me the ULP tool?

I can not seem to find the email in which you sent the ULP tool.

Drat. The problem is with a computer that I am now using, at my weekend home where I use gmail.

The address that I gave should be forwarded to gmail but for some reason when I search for

wb

intel

ULP

I am not shown the email that you kindly sent.

I know that I got the email so when I am back in town I will save the tool to disk and bring it down here physically.

Dear Intel Support

Thank you for the ULPEnable Disable tool.

I eventually used the ULPEnable (DISABLE) tool that you kindly sent.

I unzipped it, put it in the C drive, started Windows Powershell, cd .. to the C drive typed ULPEnable DISABLE,

which did not work (I was told the command did not exist) so I typed C:\ULPEnable DISABLE and that started

the program after clicking yes I want the program to run. It said nothing. There was a pause. I rebooted.

But my driver for my Ethernet port still has a little yellow triangle and it still says that it cannot start code 10.

I tried enabling and disabling it. No joy.

I tried updating the driver again. Again windows said that I have the newest driver. 12.9.16.0

There in the properties screen in the Advanced table there is another option for low power Ethernet.

I turned that to off and again disabled and enabled but sill the code 10.

Perhaps I need to install a driver manually.

Perhaps I need to be the administrator to run your tool? I am the only person that uses this laptop but

I have a username which is not "Administrator" would the tool you sent me not-function if run under non administrator username?

When I moved the tool to the C drive windows asked me "Do you want to use administrator priveledges"" and I clicked yes

but perhaps the tool just ignores non admin users.

Should you have any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for the update. * ULPEnable must be run with administrator rights under operating systems that require such rights to update the system registry as stated in the ULPenable.txt file. (please refer to the ULPenable.txt in the zipped file)

Hope this clarified.

I started up windows PowerShell x 86 by right clicking and run as administrator

"Do you really want to " Yes

I entered C:\ULPEnable DISABLE

There was no response from PowerShell or the program.

I rebooted and also tried disabling and enabling in the device manager but in both cases I am still left with the little yellow triangle and

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}

The requested operation was unsuccessful.

I also tried with PowerShell ISE running as Administrator which returns a "Completed" in the bottom bar after execution of the software.

Thanks again for sending the ULPEnable program.

Should you have any other suggestions, such as settings (of which there are very many in the properties advanced) or a different driver then I would be very grateful.

Having a look on the Internet, here are the solutions that worked (?!)

1) New motherboard

http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f136/solved-this-device-cannot-start-code-10-network-error-697933.html

2) Turn off all power saving settings via device manager. The only one I have left on is "Slowdown on Powerdown On" and I will try turning it off.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2811451/intel-ethernet-connection-i218-device-start-code.html# 18834887

3) Turn off Ultra Low Power mode (we tried that, but I wish that the tool said something like "ULP turned off"))

4) Clearing the RTC RAM with the 3-pin CLRTC jumper. Unplug everything and move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 for 10 seconds and then move back. Reset BIOS settings on restart. (That sounds a bit tricky inside a notebook)

5) Removed the CMOS Battery from the motherboard (I am not sure where to find the flat button battery inside my notebook, which can be fraught to open) This worked for three people.

6) "Oddly, if I uninstalled the driver and then "found new hardware" it would work again, even after a reboot. However, if I turned off the computer, the LAN Adapter would fail again; requiring a repeat of the uninstall step. I solved it by updating the BIOS, updating the Chipset, and then updating the LAN drivers."

https://communities.intel.com/thread/29298 https://communities.intel.com/thread/29298

and here (that deleting and finding new hardware works for a while)

http://ethernet349.rssing.com/chan-10371757/all_p28.html

and here (that deleting and finding new hardware works for a while and updating the driver from Intel works)

http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/264453-intel-825879lm-gigabit-network-card-cannot-start-code-10-a.html

The Intel drivers for this chip can be downloaded here

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/71307/Intel-Ethernet-Connection-I218-LM

7) " I did try reinstalling the latest Intel driver and unselecting all additional options like the property pages and teaming/VLAN support. With just Drivers checked during the install, the adapter worked." (I have only got a driver automatically, so I would be interested in getting a driver from intel and trying that). http://superuser.com/questions/142375/intel-network-connection-this-device-cannot-start-code-10

8) Reboot with the cable connected!

http://ethernet349.rssing.com/chan-10371757/all_p28.html

9) Others just unplugged their PC for a while. I could do that (unplug and remove the notebook main battery). I can definitely try this.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2811451/intel-ethernet-connection-i218-device-start-code.html

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/513215/this-device-cannot-start-code-10-onboard-ethernet-ports-will-not-work-33-/

10) This is not a solution so much as a suggestion from Microsoft to delete the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" in the registry entry for the corresponding GUID.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for sharing the information, Of all these sites provided, have you had any chance to try? What is then the result?

Can you try re-run the ULP tool make sure the file is in the same path where you execute the command.

thanks,

Dear Wb

No I have not had the chance to try them but I will let you know.

Is it unacceptable to specify the path "c:/ULPEnable DISABLE"?

I will try again after "cd .."-ing to my c:/ directory.

I tried

6) "uninstall the driver and then "find new hardware"

8) Reboot with the cable connected

9) unplugged PC for a while

and your suggestion of going to the ULPEnable.exe directory before executing it.

All to no avail. I still have Code 10.

Interestingly Windows PowerShell would not let me execute "ULPEnable.exe DISABLE" until I added "c:\" even when I was in the c:\ directory. I am not sure why. I was running as administrator. But when I used "c:\ULPEnable.exe DISABLE" there was no error report, just a pause. I wish that the tool said something like "ULP mode has been successfully disabled."

Imho some sort of diagnostic tool is in order.
