nvmupdate64e x710 access error

Hello,

Have  genuine intel X710da4 adapters.  Checked with yottamark and shows genuine.

We have quite many of these cards in different servers, using them for DPDK dev. We saw some issues with sriov and decided to see if update would solve some of the issues.

After  update with nvmupdate64e adapters show access error.  Had two in the server and both in the same state.  In another server one card is in access error and second one wants update while it has the latest firmware. We followed instructions from  https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18190/24769/non-volatile-memory-nvm-update-utility-for-intel-ethernet-network-adapter-700-series.html?product=82947

We took them out of the servers and replaced with new same to get back to operational state.

What would be the easiest way to unbrick these? We can place in a spare machine and try something before moving on.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Flr,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

For us to further check the issue, please provide the following details.

  • Please send photos on the unit on both sides focusing on the markings for us to validate if the unit is an OEM unit or not.
  • What is your OS?
  • What is the driver version installed?
  • What are the troubleshooting steps that you have tried so far?

If you have questions, please let us know. In case we do not hear from you, we will make a follow up after 3 workings days. Thank you.

Hello,

We tried multiple OSes: First sw update in Ubuntu 18.04. Also another card in  20.04, 22.04.

After getting access error, tried in Windows 10 Pro

I40e driver version: multiple but tried latest first (2.22.8), then attempted to roll back to earlier versions (2.17.4, 2.11.21)

Firmware version: latest first(9.10), then tried to roll back (8.1, 6.8)

troubleshooting: We attempted to drop driver versions, restore different firmware versions, tried different OSes, installed in different machines.

Hi Flr,

Thank you for the information.

From the details and serial number provided, your card identified as an OEM card.

May I have a confirmation if this card purchased separately or is it from OEM manufacturer?

Please contact the OEM manufacturer ( if your card is OEM NIC) for proper assistance to check the NVM and firmware drivers needed for the card.

Just to add, you cannot update the OEM NIC firmware even if it is a PCIe card using Intel's NVM file, you may damage the card. Same goes with a retail Intel NIC, you cannot use the NVM file from an OEM manufacturer.

Best regards,
