setting VFs state in X553 cards

I have an x553 interface and I'd like to set its VFs state from "auto" to "enable". I read on a previous discussion (*) that this is possible. I installed the latest ixgbe available on sourceforge (version 5.5.5) and I get the same error as with previous versions:

# ip l set eth1 vf 0 state enable

RTNETLINK answers: Operation not supported

It looks to me like ixgbe does not support this, contrary to i40e for instance. Is that correct?

Hello RRava,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

Aside from installing the ixgbe 5.5.5 driver, have you also tried to install the ixgbevf 4.5.3?

If you have questions, please let us know.

Hello RRava,

Let me gather the following information for me to further check this issue.

  1. What is the model of your NIC?
  2. Are you using an on-board NIC or a PCIe NIC?
  3. Can you send a picture focusing on the markings of the card?

If you have questions, please let us know.

Best regards,

Hi,

So as I was saying it's a X553 ethernet controller. It's on-board and here is a picture of the inside of the machine:

Hello RRava,

I have been trying to open the link that you provided but I am getting "Not Found" error.

And base on the result of the command, it is not supported. Please try to post a query in sourceforge, link is down below to double check the issue.

https://sourceforge.net/p/e1000/feature-requests/

And also. the I40e driver has the VF state enabled command indicated in the release notes:

If you have questions, please let us know.
