12V instead of 9V PowerSupply for Nios Stratix Edition?

Hi,

I've an old Nios DevKit (StratixEd, EP1S10). The UG says, I've to use a 9V PowerSupply,

but due to the lack of 9V-Supply I want to know if it's possible to use a 12V Supply?

On Board, there is an TI LM2678 LDO (min 8V, max >>12V) and the 9V-Line

is only connected to this LDO and to both prototype connectors (Schematics!).

Thanks,

Jotta

You are unlikely to damage it, but the regulator might run hot and could go into thermal shutdown if it gets too hot.

Thanks for your post.

The LDO's abs max is 45V, operation range is 8V to 40V, so 12V should be no problem.

I'm only affraid that the schematics shows not all 9V-Connections.

And btw, some ExtBoards for the prototype connectors (SantaCruz-Connector) want

12V. Is this standard?

It's not just the input voltage range, but the power dissipated (voltage dropped by the regulator * the current delivered).

The 9V input might have been chosen because of this. You could try 12V and it the regulators get hot glue on something

to act as a heatsink.

Not very pretty but if it's just to allow you to use the board.....

Guys,

I have a question which comes under the same category. I am clear about 9V but how many amperes should the power supply be? 300mA or 700mA or 1000mA. When I buy in the internet, this is important?

Cheers,

Satya
