I have a Bytelblaster-II cable. However, the cable is very short. Does the ByteBlaster-II work with longer cables. i.e. can I attach a longer cable to the PC and connect the Byteblaster-II to that cable ?

I've used at least 2 m cable, may be more. Parallel printers are usually working with 5 m with no problems, I expect the same with ByteBlaster.

I tried to extend both ends of the ByteBlaster. It showed up that extending the 10 wire cable is not a good idea. It's better to us a standard printer cable extension on the other side. However, maybe because of my PC, a 3 m extension did not work properly. On my PC 2 meters was the max. extension length that worked reliantly.
