DE2 Dead on arrival?

I recently picked up an unopened and unused DE2 development board, and I believe there is an issue with the power supply circuitry. Once opened I unwrapped and plugged in the 9V power supply included within the kit, and once powering up after 5 seconds or so the board shut off and started to smoke! I checked with others with the same board and I have the correct power supply, and with no visible damage this leads me to think that the board itself is at fault.

Is there any way I could troubleshoot the issue with the board, if not replace it outright? I received it through a college professor, so I am unsure about any warranty as the platform is fairly old.

You mean this board?

It is not an Intel/Altera product, it is a third party product made by TerASIC in Taiwan.

You can buy directly from them, or thru US distributors like Mouser or DigiKey.

As indicated, that board is obsolete and not being produced anymore.

The web link above has links to full board user manual and schematics, that might help.

Warranty? Doubtful unless you have the original purchase documents.

That board is old techology (CycloneII) anyway. You have to use an old version of Quartus to use it.

Better choices would be a DE0-NANO or DE0-CV for learning now.
