Stratix III dev kit + NIOS II; Accessing HSMC Port?

Hello all,

I am new to this development cycle; using a dev board with an FPGA to embed an IP based processor - so please excuse any silly questions.

I have successfully built and run a simple "hello world" program with the Nios2IDE on my Stratix III Development board from Altera. I am also able to blink one of the user LEDs as suggested in the NIOS II tutorial.

My first step in my design is to access one of the HSMC pins as part of communicating to a serial device. This is where I'm getting stymied. I cannot seem to find any reference to the HSMC in any of the NIOS II header files (specifically System.h) so have no idea how to proceed.

I have a breakout board which came with the development kit ("HSMC Debug Header Breakout Board) - it basically allows me to connect a ribbon cable to the HSMC connector and also has some LEDs on it; I would like to - for example - blink an LED on that board.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

There you will be able to find some information about breakout board.

Good luck!
