Design Overview

This reference design demonstrates the implementation of Triple rate SDI II with Tx PLL Dynamic Switching Feature (Enable Tx PLL select for 1/1.000 and 1/1.001 data rate reconfiguration) in SDI II transmitter for Arria® V GX. The purpose of this design is to demostrate to users how to implement the new feature i.e. Tx PLL Dynamic Switching.

This design contains one SDI II transmitter instance and one SDI II receiver instance. The SDI II transmitter instance can be switched in between 1/1.000 (PAL) or 1/1.001 (NTSC) data rate. The SDI II receiver instance is responsible for receiving the output data from SDI II transmitter and verify the output in signal rx_format. 

 

System Requirements

This design was compiled in Quartus II v13.0sp1 B232 for Arria V GX FPGA Starter Kit.

 

Running the Design

1. Set up the hardware by connecting SMB cable to the SDI video port of Arria V GX FPGA Starter Kit.

2. Download the design file in the link below.

3. Compile the design in Quartus v13.0sp1 and configure the sof file into the Arria V GX FPGA Starter Kit.

4. To run the SDI II transmitter demonstration. The Switch and LEDs indicated the following conditions:

  • Switch DIP switch [SW3.0, SW3.1, SW3.2] to change internal pattern generator signal standard according to the following video formats.

3'b000 = HD - SMPTE274M 1080i60

3'b001 = HD - SMPTE274M 1080p30

3'b010 = HD - SMPTE296M 720p60

3'b100 = HD - SMPTE274M 1080p24

3'b110 = HD - SMPTE296M 720p30

3'b101 = 3Ga - SMPTE274M 1080p60

3'b011 = 3Gb - SMPTE296M 2x720p30

3'b111 = 3Gb - SMPTE274M 1080p60

  • Switch SW3.3 to change the transceiver reference clock

0 = Select 148.5MHz (xcvr_refclk) as reference clock

1 = Select 148.35MHz (xcvr_refclk_alt) as reference clock

5. To run the SDI II receiver demonstration. The LEDs indicated the following conditions:

  • With USER PB0 (S5) = 'ON'

USER LEDs(D20 and D21) indicate the transmitter video standard.

USER LED (D22) indicates the switching between received SDI II data rate (1/1.000 and 1/1.001).

It illuminates when the received SDI II video format is NTSC and lights off when it is PAL.

USER LED (D23) indicates the Heartbeat of the receiver recovered clock out

  • With USER PB0 (S5) = 'OFF'

USER LEDs(D20 and D21) indicate the receiver video standard.

USER LED (D22) indicates the Frame locked

USER LED (D23) indicates the TRS locked
