Design Overview

This reference design demonstrates the triple rate SDI implementing the Tx Mux Feature (Enable Tx PLL select for 1/1.000 and 1/1.001 data rate reconfiguration) in SDI transmitter for the Stratix® IV GX. 

The purpose of this design is to show you how to implement the new feature Tx Mux and the combination of transmitter and receiver reconfiguration in a single reconfiguration logic file.

This design contains one SDI transmitter instance and one SDI receiver instance. 

The SDI transmitter instance can be switched in between 1/1.000 or 1/1.001 data rate. 

The SDI receiver instance will responsible to receive the output data from SDI transmitter and verify the output in signal rx_video_format. 

System Requirements

This design was compiled for Quartus II v11.1sp2 for Stratix IV GX FPGA Development Kit with SDI HSMC daugther card.

Running the Design

1. Set up the hardware by connecting SDI HSMC daughter card into HSMC port A of Stratix IV GX development board.

2. Download the design file in the link below.

3. Compile the design in Quartus v11.1sp2 and configure the sof file into the Stratix IV GX development board.

4. To run the SDI transmitter demonstration. The Switch and LEDs indicated the following conditions:

  • Switch DIP switch [SW3.2, SW3.1] : 11=SD ; 10=HD ; 00=3G to change internal pattern generator signal standard.
  • Switch SW3.3: 1= 100% color bar ; 0= 75% color bar
  • Switch SW3.4: Select pathological SDI checkfield pattern
  • Switch SW3.7: 1= Select 148.35MHz as reference clock ; 0 = Select 148.5MHz as reference clock
  • LEDs 15 and 14 indicate the transmitter signal standard
  • LEDs 11 indicate the switching in between 1/1.000 and 1/1.001 data rate.

5. To run the SDI receiver demonstration. The LEDs indicated the following conditions:

  • LEDs 13 and 12 indicate the receiver signal standard
  • LED 10 illuminates when the receiver frame format is stable.
  • LED 9 illuminates when the receiver line format is stable.
  • LED 8 illuminates when the receiver word is aligned.
  • LED 7 to 0 indicate the received SDI video format.
