B580 won't display on an older monitor? Any ideas why?

I have a PC running Windows 10 with a 19 inch Dell LCD model 1905FP. I swapped out an Nvidia 780ti for the B580 Founders Edition and got no video, even during POST. I thought the new card was broken, so I plugged in a brand new monitor and got video just fine. So I booted up, installed the updated Intel drivers / software once I got into Windows and connected the old LCD as a second monitor.

Windows detects it as a second monitor, but on the LCD all it says is Cannot Display this Video Type. Windows now doesn't call it the Dell 1905fp monitor anymore, its a 640x480 monitor, which i at least changed to Generic PnP Monitor, opening up a lot more resolutions.

I've messed around with the resolution options, thinking that Windows was trying to push something higher to it, but that hasn't helped. Updating Intel drivers again early this week with a new version also didn't help.

The only non-typical thing that's in play here is the LCD has DVI and VGA as inputs, so I'm using an HDMI cable out of the Arc and a HDMI to DVI adapter at the monitor. That worked before I put the Arc in, and just to be sure I connected a laptop (Thinkpad Yoga gen 5) with HDMI out to the LCD (with DVI adapter) and the monitor worked fine.

I bought a Displayport to DVI cable off Amazon to try the display ports on the Arc but that didn't change anything, still the same feedback on the monitor.

I messed around with Adapter Settings for the monitor in Windows and found a list of supported resolutions. As I selected one and clicked Apply, the dell monitor flicked black then came back to the Error message. One had a 59Hz refresh rate, the resolution was 640x480. I selected that one and it worked! I got the extended desktop. Obviously 640x480 is not usable, so I'd like to figure out how to get up to 1280x1024 at 59/60hz.

Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application to your system. Intel® System Support Utility for Windows*

Open the application and click scan to see system and device information.

The Intel® System Support Utility defaults to the Summary View on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says summary to change to Detailed View.

To save your scan, click Next and click Save. You can save the file to any accessible location on your computer.

Attach the file here.

 

Have you tried updating the drivers (32.0.101.6559 (WHQL Certified)) to the latest? You may download the driver here: Intel® Arc™ & Iris® Xe Graphics - Windows*

Hello buttermage,


Thank you for providing the DDU and SSU logs. After reviewing them, I can confirm that you are running the latest version. Regarding your monitor specifications, I was unable to find detailed technical specifications on Dell's website as they are no longer available. However, I did find some specifications online. Your laptop's HDMI port is version 1.4b.


The B580 graphics output supports HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1, which are backward compatible with older versions. However, given the age of your monitor, there might be issues with the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) being recognized by the B580. Additionally, I cannot guarantee that using a convertible adapter will work properly with the B580.


To proceed, I recommend generating an EDID file for your Dell monitor. Please follow these steps:


  1. Download the Intel Graphics Command Center (Beta) from the Microsoft Store.
  2. After installation, open the app and navigate to the Support section.
  3. Go to System Diagnostic and click on the "Generate Report" button.
  4. Save the generated text file and send it to this thread.


This will help us further diagnose the issue.

I would agree that it seems the Arc is having a problem reading the monitor information. Remember I said that Windows lists it as a Dell 1905FP when I use the old Nvidia card and either a Generic PNP Monitor or a 640x480 Monitor when I use the Arc.

The monitor is very old and, according to Dell's information in the appendix, only supports 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz. However, the diagnostic report shows that the Arc B580 graphics driver receives this information from the monitor:

This is not good. Can you provide more details about the DVI adapter used?

It's the "BENFEI DisplayPort to DVI 6 Feet Cable, DisplayPort to DVI Adapter Male to Male Gold-Plated Cord Cable for Lenovo, Dell, HP and Other Brand" on Amazon

 

on the HDMI side, I got "Monoprice DVI-D Single Link Male to HDMI Female adapter", also from Amazon.

I ran the test with both the HDMI and the DP connections. They seemed to give different results so I attached them both.

The data shows that you are using or have used 2 monitors:

 

LG DualUp 28MQ780

  • Year of manufacture 2023
  • 2560 x 2880 @ 60 Hz 10-bit HDR
  • 2 x HDMI 2.0
  • 1 x DisplayPort 1.4
  • Coordinated Video Timing - Reduced Blanking (CVT-RB)

 

Dell 1905FP

  • Year of manufacture 2005
  • 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz (75 Hz)
  • Aspect ratio 5:4
  • Video timing according to DMT (Discrete Monitor Timings)

 

This is evident from the HEX code in the TXT files you attached. These are the so-called Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), which are sent from display devices to video sources and, in the case of a Windows PC, are stored in the Windows registry.

 

I would recommend the following connection scheme:

Arc B580 >>> [DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable] >>> LG DualUp

Arc B580 >>> [HDMI to HDMI cable] >>> [HDMI to DVI adapter] >>> Dell 1905FP

 

The LG monitor has enough headroom to run HDR10 if you connect it via DisplayPort. With HDMI, it's tight.

 

Connecting the Dell monitor via HDMI also has the technical advantage that HDMI and DVI are electrically compatible, and no protocol conversion is necessary. The Dell monitor also seems to send a correct EDID. However, I cannot say for sure whether this was saved by the Nvidia card in the Windows registry and is now no longer read correctly by the Arc B580. If this is the case, we can force the EDID on the Arc driver.

 

Please proceed as follows:

  • Connect the monitors as recommended above.
  • Download Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
  • Run "reset-all.exe" from the CRU download package and restart the computer. This will remove all EDIDs from the registry. Also this "MS_0001" device. I just saw on my Iris Xe that this is the result of a failsafe running function of the Intel graphics driver that creates this EDID automatically if something goes wrong. After reboot EDIDs will be read again through the video cables from the connected displays. This is then the virgin state, so to speak.

Ideally, you can now select the resolution and refresh rate you want for both monitors in the Windows display settings. If the resolution on the Dell monitor still cannot be set correctly, then the EDID was not read correctly, and we can force this manually:

 

  • Please download the file “EDID_Dell_1905FP.txt” from the attachment
  • Run CRU.exe
  • Open the dropdown menu in the top left. There should be two entries to choose from. One is called "GSM5C5B - LG SDQHD". That is the LG monitor. So the other one, whatever it is called, must be the Dell monitor. There it may say “DEL400D - DELL 1905FP” OR “MS_0001”. Select that one.
  • Proceed as follows:

  • Close CRU with OK and reboot.
  • The Arc B580 driver should now be based on the correct EDID and the resolution and refresh rate can be set accordingly. This works in my simulation environment.

Thanks. I followed the process. After I did reset-all in CRU and rebooted Windows did name the Dell monitor the MS_0001 and after I imported the EDID you attached, it now says Del400D - Dell 1905fp in CRU. So I think that worked.

 

The problem is, the monitor shows no signs of life. Its currently in Power Save mode, not even saying that original message about not being able to display the video mode.

 

In Display settings in windows, the Display Resolution and Orientation are both greyed out when i select the Dell (vs the LG which acts as expected). If i go to Advanced Display Settings and Choose Display, the "Display 2 Dell 1905FP" is selectable, but under Display Information is says "Display 2: Connected to Intel Arc b580 but it also says, Display isn't active."

 

I can't seem to wake it up. I even tried leaving the monitor unplugged for 5 minutes... I rebooted again... I turned off the monitor a few times...

 

Oh i ran the EDID Test again, just for confirmation everything came over correct.

I spent an hour this morning messing with it and eventually got it back to showing an extended desktop at 640x480x59hz. There are more resolution options ,but only one at 59hz.

Yes, I can confirm from the file that you did everything correctly.

I can't really explain why the monitor doesn't work as expected. I would still try the following:

There should be 2 DisplayPort connectors free on the Arc B580. Please connect the Dell monitor with the BENFEI DisplayPort to DVI cable and run "reset-all.exe" from the CRU download package and restart the computer.

 

How does the system behave then?

After reset-all and rebooting, the Dell monitor comes up with a black screen saying the video mode cannot be displayed. I can go back and set the resolution to 640x480x59hz from the other monitor and the Dell displays as an extended desktop again. 

 

I did notice in that list of resolutions there were many other options that had 59hz now. I'm not sure how/when that happened. I tried a few, especially 1280x1024 but none of them worked.

 

I snagged my wife's monitor, which has displayport and DVI, its an HP ZR24W and tried that. The DVI - DP cable works. I can get native resolution on the HP monitor. Just as an experiment i set the HP's resolution to the native resolution of the Dell, 1280x1024 and then tried to mirror the desktop to the Dell monitor. That didn't work.

 

Anyway, I'm out of ideas.

As you now know, establishing digital video connections is always a give and take, with data flowing in both directions. Maybe that 20-year-old Dell monitor is just too old. Unfortunately, backwards compatibility can't be guaranteed forever.

 

Basic monitors are very cheap these days, so it might be worth upgrading.

Thanks MUC. I played around a little more last night and didn't get anything new to happen. Unfortunately upgrading the monitor isn't possible right now. I bought the Intel card hoping to save some money on a budget build. Video card / Monitor incompatibility was not on my radar.

 

@DeancR_Intel what's the next step? Seems like a bug / missing driver functionality, no?

Well that's disappointing! The Intel works on other DVI adapted monitors like my HP, so it's not the adapter, and the Dell monitor works with other GPUs like Nvidia's so it's not the monitor. After all that just to say you can't support it is frustrating.
