Display driver stopped responding and has "successfully" recovered

My Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 keeps having problems, if I do anything that puts strain on it (ie gaming or even a screensaver) it stops working, my screen goes black for a few seconds, and I have these pixel-like dots around my screen as well as displaying Display driver stopped responding and has "successfully" recovered, I realized my NIVIDA GeForce GT 640M was not set as the global driver for my games, I set it as such and had no problems for awhile, recently though a game slipped past these settings (for reasons unknown) and the problems started up again. It does not matter if I restart as long as I have the Intel driver activated I have these problems, if I disable it however these problems stop. I have tried updating all my drivers and my .NET Framework and it does not help. It usually last from anywhere to the one time to a week, I can not tell why it stops other then leaving my computer off for days but I need a more permanent fix, I am afraid it might be hardware related but I want to exhaust all my options before taking it in to have it opened up.

Hi J0,

Based on your information I would recommend you doing some steps:

  1. Do a power cycle by removing the battery form your computer and press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds.
  2. Update the bios in your system using the latest provided by the computer manufacturer.
  3. Test the system if possible without the NVIDIA graphics card to discard an possible hardware issue with 3rd party components.

Rama thanks for the information. Based on the report, I recommend you uninstalling the driver following the instructions in the link below:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-034574.htm http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-034574.htm

After uninstalling the current driver, please install the latest driver that can be downloaded at the following link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22167 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22167

If you get a notification/error message, that indicates that your computer manufacturer does not allow the installation of generic Intel video drives. You are required to install drivers from your computer manufacturer.

You may try to force the installation of Intel generic drivers by performing manual procedure, see here for instructions:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033915.htm http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033915.htm

Here is the zip version of the video driver:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22166 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22166

vladopi4a,

Please reset the BIOS settings to default. Try not to over clock the processor since this can cause problems on the system. Uninstall the driver and install the latest one at this location:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24245&lang=eng https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24245&lang=eng

Ahsan2012@,

Please try uninstalling the driver and installing the following:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=22167 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=22167

If you have problems to install the driver, try the steps mentioned here:

Hey Kevin, I am having a similar issue. When I do something graphics intensive, sometimes it happens right away or sometimes it takes a while, my system completely freezes. In an effort to figure out this problem, I installed HWMonitor, and was running task manager while I ran a graphics-intensive program. Instead of locking up, it had a little balloon at the bottom of my screen, and it said the intel HD graphics driver stopped responding, but recovered successfully.

Please review the information on previous posts since I have provided troubleshooting steps. If the issue persists, I would recommend you contacting your Computer Manufacture for them to take a look into the system.
