How do I rescue a RAID-5 set marked failed?

Hi - I'm new to this forum but an IT old-timer. I have been using a RAID 5 set with 4 disks (G33M + ICH9) for over almost a year when I did a Hyper-V 2008 R2 upgrade which lost sight of the Intel Pro1000 network card. Then after following another post on this subject they suggested a motherboard BIOS upgrade might get the network card back. I did the BIOS upgrade but system restarted clearing the BIOS settings and changing the SATA mode back to 'native'. When I restarted the PC and set the BIOS SATA mode back to RAID and restarted it showed the the first disk as 'non-member' and the status as 'failed' and not bootable. As it's marked failed I'm guessing it when in to a MSM 8.9 rebuild during shutdown.

Is there any way I can get the RAID set back? Would I be able to boot/install to another disk and mark the non-member disk as member?

Do first backup (if this works) what you can by doing the following and at no point use reset disk to non-raid.

In the BIOS set SATA to SATA/IDE mode.

Install an OS like XP on another disk (be sure not to install on the RAID disks).

Install Freeware Raid Reader their maybe two copies of your array use properties to find which one is recoverable and open that one and backup what you can.

This next bit may or may not work to set the array to degraded.

In the BIOS set SATA back to RAID mode.

Reinstall an OS like XP with (I suggest) 8.8 drivers on another disk (be sure not to install on the RAID disks).

Install MSM 8.8 and open in advanced mode

If one disk has an X by it right click on it and reset disk to non-raid

when you reboot the array may be degraded.
