No HDMI-Audio after a resolution change or a refresh rate change

Hi,

 

I have this display audio issue since years

 

Known Games that fail:

 

  • XCOM: Enemy unknown
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
  • Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Plenty of others I cant remember

 

Known products that have this issue:

 

  • NUC7PYH
  • Thinkpad E130 (Core i3 3327U)
  • Transformer Book T302CA (Core M3 6Y30)
  • Core i5-6600k (without a discrete grapics card)

 

Also all those products work fine with different operating systems (eg Linux or BSD) so it is probably a driver bug.

 

Has anyone found a solution or fix to it other than installing a different OS or running those games in windowed mode?

To better assist you, we would like to gather more information about the systems you are running these games on.

 

1. Please run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) on Windows* (e.g. on the Intel® NUC Kit NUC7PJYH and the computer with Intel® HD Graphics 530) and attach the reports to this thread.

 

1. Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application in your computer.

2. Open the application and click "Scan" to see system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".

3. To save your scan, click Next and click Save.

 

2. Please provide steps to replicate the issue. These steps are very crucial to find the root cause and fix. A screenshot to illustrate the issue is a huge plus. A video of the failure is even better. Attach it to the post or provide the YouTube* link.

Also two screencasts - sorry but I had todo this with my phone.

 

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and as you can see there is no sound in the menu if I run this in full screen - stangely the intro works.

Hello HJ2,

 

Most PC games work fine on Intel® HD Graphics and Windows® 10. However, some of the oldest titles have compatibility issues. These issues may appear for several reasons that may not be related to the graphics drivers, such as:

 

  • The game may require a software library or component (for example, DirectX* 9 or older) that is no longer automatically installed in Windows 10.
  • The game may be a 16-bit application and these are no longer supported on Windows* 64-bit version.

 

Try any of the following troubleshooting steps:

 

1. Run the game as Administrator:

  • Right-click the game executable file.
  • Click Run as Administrator.
  • When prompted by the User Account Control (UAC) click Yes.

 

2. Run the game in Compatibility mode:

  • Right-click the game executable file.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Enable the option Run this program in compatibility mode for:
  • Select the compatible Operating System from the drop-down menu (Windows* XP, Windows* 7, etc.)
  • Click Apply.

 

3. Use different Compatibility settings:

  • Right-click the game executable file.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab and enable any of these options (one at a time):

-Reduce color mode

-Run in 640x480 screen resolution

-Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

-Run this program as an administrator

its not about an old game or compatibility settings as shown in the screencasts - it is jutst the hdmi audio driver thats buggy

all those issues disappear on my desktoppc if I use my discrete geforce 1060 with the nvidia display audio/hdmi

Hello HJ2,

 

By default, Windows* 10 uses DirectX* 12 and it is not backward compatible. To make sure that this issue is not being caused by the version of DirectX* installed, we would like to know if you tested the steps recommended.

 

According to the system requirements of these games, they use:

 

DirectX* :9.0

  • XCOM: Enemy unknown
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
  • Valkyria Chronicles

 

DirectX: Version 11

  • Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel

 

Please let us know if the issue persists.

yes, and there are no differences.

 

running over headphones/headphone jack = Sound in fullscreen

running over optical/SPDIF= Sound in fullscreen

running over HDMI = no Sound in fullscreen

Does the game resolution match the screen resolution in Windows*? If they do not, please try setting the same resolution and refresh rate in both the game and Windows* and let us know if the issue persists.

As already told you if I run the game in the native/windows screen resolution 2560x1080@60Hz the sound is there however thats no solution since:

 

  • some games will run at 59Hz
  • some also don't support ultra widescreen and fallback to 1920x1080
  • the UHD 605 can't handle the native windows resolution on games

I would like to confirm that unfortunately this is an issue that has been around for a couple of years by now. Per example:

At the time our debug team determined that this occurs due to an issue with the game(s) code taking longer to initialize the HDMI audio. More detailed information can be found here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000035049/mini-pcs/intel-nuc-kits.html

 

I realize that since this is affecting a large number of old games (and a small number of relatively new games) requesting the game devs to go back and patch their code ranges from unfeasible to impossible, thus we have submitted a new bug report [ID 2207887793] demanding our dev team to revisit the previous call and try to work around this situation.

 

As soon as we have any news we'll post it here.
