Onix Odyssey B580, only one fan spinning or 50c idle.

Hi,

So, the problem is fan curves/fan settings.
My GPU idles on 50 degrees Celcius and it's Onix Odyssey Intel Arc B580, as stated above.
It gets there on default fan setting when fans switch on and off as they wish. To me, 50c idle is a bit too high, even though I am using two screens.

The fix is to set up fan curves manually, but it creates another issue - I can only set them up at 30% minimum (gets me to 30c idle) and only one fan is spinning.

So it's either auto mode - 50c idle, fans mostly off idle, both fans working on around 500-1000rpm under load and it keeps the GPU temp at 58 max.
Pretty bad having 50c idle and 58c max load while gaming.

Or manual fans - only one fan working both idle and max load, 30c idle, but it's minimum 1400rpm, impossible to set this up lower.

This is a bit weird to me, the card is not weak and it does not need to be 50c at idle, makes me pretty disappointed in the product.

Intel Graphics Software version 25.52.2110.4
Driver v. 32.0.101.8509

The question is - am I doing something wrong? Is there any way to fix this?
If the card can control it on it's own, why cannot I set up my desired temp for them to switch back on? Why cannot I utilise both with fan curves and why cannot I get them below 30%rpm?

Waiting for the answer, thanks in advance.

Hello jkon_96,

Thank you for posting in Intel community Forum.

For me to better understand and diagnose the issue further, let me ask you to provide detailed responses to the following questions. This information will help me isolate the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward.

  1. Was it working fine before?
  2. If yes, what was the last change made in the system before the issue started?
  3. Aside from changing the fan cure, what are the other troubleshooting steps that you tried?
  4. For me to review the hardware and the driver installed, please help generate the SSU logs of your system. Kindly refer to the link below for the steps:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your answer.

I think it was the same since the beginning, I bought this card not so long ago and did not pay attention to the fans before, only recently.
I changed curves manually and did not check fans, because I did not expect onyl one to work. I remembered using HWMonitor some time ago and seeing only one fan rpm value there, the other one was 0rpm, but I thought it's maybe only a glitch.

I tried using third party for curves hoping it will allow me to set them below 0%, but it did not allow me changing them at all.

Please find the log attached.

Thanks.

Hello jkon_96,

Thank you for that information.

Is there a chance that you can try your Arc B580 on a different machine to isolate?

Because if the card is showing the same issue on a different system, you may contact Onix to report the card.

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Hi Michael,

Thanks,

Yes, I can install it in another PC I own which is a completely different platform.
If that does not change anything, does it mean the card is faulty?

Thank you.

Hello jkon_96,

Thank you for that quick reply.

Yes, it is possible that this is a hardware issue and you may contact the manufacturer of the card for replacement.

Hi Michael,

Thanks you very much for the help so far, but I still have not found any solutions to my problem.
I got in contact with Onix, they said that 50c idle and fans active only above is within range for the GPU I own and it has been designed this way. This seems strange to me, but if Onix's engineers say that, I am forced to believe.

And I do not think that any complaint to it's seller in my country would stand if that's what manufacturers opinion on the matter is.

Also: "Intel currently doesn’t enable 3rd party software to alter than fan profile setting. So using third party for fan curves might cause problems."

This is what I got told after explaining to them that I have tried using FanControl together with GPU-Z and HWInfo plug-ins in order to force individual fan control and get fan#2 to work and I understand it.

What I still do not understand though is does fan#2 work on default no problem, but any manual fan curve, whether it's within Intel's software or any third party software, causes the issue with only fan#1 spinning and much above rpm required for the current state.
As stated before, it's 1400rpm minimum and it's too high. With FanControl I managed to set it up to 800rpm idle, which is still a little bit too high, but idle temps were below 40c. I had no luck with forcing fan#2 spin, if I had, it would require much lower rpms to stay below 40c.

It is not damaged, it works, but only on default curves. I am not an engineer but if that's the case, it seems to me that it might be more a software related issue than hardware issue. And it probably takes some troubleshooting to fix, but should be possible?

Would it not be possible to force default spin below 50c?
This would also fix the issue. I have no problem with default curves, but 50c idle is a little bit to much in my opinion still, even though the manufacturer says it has been designed this way.

Hello jkon_96,

Thank you for the update.

OEM manufacturers can alter/enhance/modify cards based on their design of the product. And those changes are unknown to us.

If they say that this is a normal behavior and the card is working properly, that is good since there is no problem with your card.

My initial analysis is the design of the card only works for default settings. It is also possible that there is no hardware fan control, that is why the Fan#2 stop when you are trying to apply different settings. They also market this as a quiet card, that is also another factor why the fans are regulated.

Again, the only way to confirm this is with Onix since they are the one who designed the whole card. I am just trying me best to provide possible explanations.

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.
