Screen turns blank but the backlight stays on with intel arc A380 on linux

Any distro I use with any driver I have tried seems to yield the same result when running a combination of my Intel Arc A380 with any linux distro. The display never truly turns off.

The way this bug works is really bizarre. The screen dims after the minute passes, then it says there's no signal to the monitor. Then it turns back on to the desktop, then it turns off after the another minute by dimming itself, but this time it doesn't turn off the screen. The display is black, but the backlight is still on and I can sometimes still see the pointer.

Hello ArialCCAA,

Thank you for raising this concern via Intel Community. For me to better understand your issue with Arc A380, may I know the graphics driver version currently installed in your system? And can you provide a video where the screen turns blank?

And also kindly check Intel® Arc™ Graphics Driver - Ubuntu.* to find a driver for A380 for linux.

Hello John. Sorry for the delay in response. I did see your reply, but did not have the time to fulfill your request these past few days. Been doing a lot of baking work, but today is a free day so I managed to fulfill your requests.

1 - I had already tried the latest official release of the drivers (747008) from the intel repos for ubuntu 22.04 and 24.10, they resulted in the screen never turning off, as well as the open source drivers on fedora 41.

2 - I run a b350m-a and a 1800X with rebar enabled if that's of any relevance.

3 - I attached the video you requested. As you can see, the backlight still is on, this happens whether I have 2 monitors in or not. Also dont mind the scan looking thing on the second monitor, the monitor is dying, but I believe that doesnt matter as the problem persists even without that monitor connected.

Hello ArialCCAA,

Thank you for providing the video that I requested. I already watched it, and it will help me with the investigation on this issue. Just want to know if this issue has happened before. What is the driver's version that doesn't produce this kind of issue?

Hello John. This issue happens every time with all distros I have attempted to use in this media server. The only solution I have found to this issue is changing to windows.
It has been happening ever since I got my A380 to be honest, which was over a year ago. So basically all linux drivers I have used in the A380, which include the open source drivers and the latest proprietary driver (ID 747008).

The one from the video being used in fedora is:
lspci -n -n -k | grep -A 2 -e VGA -e 3D
0a:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation DG2 [Arc A380] [8086:56a5] (rev 05)
 Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Device [1849:6004]
 Kernel driver in use: i915

In short: there is no driver version on linux I have tested that doesn't cause this issue to happen. All distros and all driver versions I have used display this behavior.

Hello ArialCCAA,

I do apologize if all the distros you tried to use are not working properly with Linux. I will have an internal investigation with this concern, and once I have an update, I will get back to you.

Hello ArialCCAA,

I apologize for any confusion regarding the inquiry about the graphics driver for Intel Arc. I want to clarify that Intel primarily supports Ubuntu for ARC graphics drivers. Additionally, could you let me know if you have used Ubuntu before? If so, please share the version of Ubuntu and its kernel version.
