I seached within Intel Support and what I got were Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller drivers for MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=intel%20usb%203.0%20extensible%20host%20controller http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=intel%20usb%203.0%20extensible%20host%20controller

Microsoft Windows 8 was released yesterday, October 26 and where is the compatible driver for it?

Could an Intel technical support representative feedback to technical support about this problem?

I have speeds around 65-125 MB/s where before i couldn't pass the 35 MB/s.

What you were saying is that the "hacked" Intel device driver performs better than the Microsoft version of Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller driver.

In that case, I would appreciate it if you could fill out the feedback form at Intel's website (see my post on November 9 at 11.33pm). We ought to let Intel know that Microsoft's driver is not performing up to par.

Thank you for your co-operation.

I have many "Hub roots" listed in the device mgr, but none specifically listed Intel Hub Root. Of which do you speak? I'm trying to get my external hub to work right this way but I can't seem to get it to work. I definitely seem to need that driver for USB 3.0 support.

Does your computer have native Intel 7 series chipset?

My motherboard chipset is Z77.

It seems that the 'universal' USB 3 drivers in windows 8 do not allow installing directly from USB 3. I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230409 THIS laptop and wanted to try out windows 8 installing it from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233325 THIS flash drive. I have modified boot.wim to include my intel USB 3 drivers in windows 7 and the install process takes about 3 minutes (installing onto force GS SSDs in raid 0) and I was hoping to see similar performance in windows 8. Since there are no windows 8 USB 3 boot drivers for the intel chipset it seems that there simply is no way to do this. When you are testing out slipstreaming drivers into an install this is hugely annoying as I have to burn a DVD and install from it each trial, thanks a lot intel.

Hey Bowie, I have been looking through your posts and been having a little trouble judging what your exact problem is. I know another poster whose USB 3.0 ports will only function as 2.0 ports, and get messages about connecting the device into a 3.0 port. Is that the type of thing you are needing a new driver for?

My 2 USB 3.0 devices are transferring at the same speeds as Windows 7, which is around 120 MB/s for the file I am transferring.

You mentioned earlier about how the Upgrade Advisor wanted the Intel 3.0 drivers removed. I agree it does, and I notice the hub drivers for Windows 8 are USBHUB3.SYS, where the drivers in Windows 7 were iUSBHUB3.SYS. I don't know what the actual differences between the drivers are.

I have not checked the drivers for the actual controller.

Interesting quote from an Intel Support page:

"Windows 8 has native in-box USB 3.0 driver. Intel is not releasing a specific USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver for Windows 8."

In the left margin of that page whose URL you provided, there is feedback form for us to fill out.

May I suggest that those who are dissatisfied with the current device driver provided by Microsoft fill out the form to let Intel know that it'd be in its customers' interest to release one for Windows 8?

What do you guys think?

I checked for updates and there was one from intel. After updating, it seemed to fix my usb 3.0 errors. Let me know if you guys tried it with the intel update from windows update app.

Can't say what the KB number was. I was getting desperate and clicked on update from search charm, then chose this optional update. Take a look at the snapshot. I tried uninstalling, disabling, only for it to come back on under device manager. After trying the uninstalling multiple times, then trying to update the drivers, then trying everything else that came to mind, it appears to be working once i did this update. I double checked with my card reader and seagate 3.0 usb external drive, and it worked. No more "could be faster with usb 3.0" verbiage. Not a tech wiz, but I was really getting irritated with the windows 8 usb 3.0 error like everyone else was getting.

Thanks for the snapshot. What you installed is the Intel Management Engine Interface (a.k.a. IMEI), NOT the USB 3.0 extensible host controller driver. For more info on what IMEI is, please click the following link: http://lwn.net/Articles/261712/ http://lwn.net/Articles/261712/

What did you mean by "and it worked"? Do you get USB 3.0 speeds when you transfer files between your computer and your Seagate USB 3.0 eHDD?

Most of us here are upset with getting USB 2.0 speeds using Microsoft's USB 3.0 device driver included in Windows 8.

Yes, every time I connected a device that had usb 3.0 capabilities (usb 3.0 wire/cord and device) it will allow me transfer speeds at 60mb/s and above... minimum. Before, I was capping at 20-30 on my usb 3.0 devices and would keep telling me that it could perform faster if it was connected to usb 3.0 ....

Even my usb 2.0 devices were transferring at 40+- MB/S. It's odd, everything is working fine for me now. The only other step I could think of was using my ccleaner to uninstall this NEC Electronics usb 3.0 host controller utility. I uninstalled it, then restarted, but I still saw the intel host controller in device manager. So I tried to uninstall it again, but my devices still kept saying it could perform faster. So after I did the update, I thought it fixed it, but perhaps uninstalling this NEC electronics controller utility helped as well. I am so clueless when it comes to this, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in because I know it could be annoying to others. AS of now, I am still getting usb 3.0 speeds.

I am a bit confused. Could you be kind enough to tell us exactly what chipset you have on your motherboard: is it Intel or NEC? Thanks.

I, and a few others, have asked about this over at

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware?tm=1352991224820&tab=all http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware?tm=1352991224820&tab=all

with, essentially, no response. If you have this issue, please go there and bring this up.

To Intel: as others have said, if you're going to delegate the writing of drivers for your hardware to Microsoft, then you'd better start putting pressure on them. Non-working drivers for your hardware is NOT in your corporate interest.

I added my question http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware/intel-usb-30-bootwim-generic-windows-8-usb-30/1c885325-3ba5-4ca2-b9d8-a0f97a2b27e2 HERE

I really hope that there is a simple fix here like simply adding some drivers to boot.wim like there was in windows 7.

I cant help but to think that Intel simply wants thunderbolt to take off so badly that they are abandoning USB 3.0 prematurely in an effort to speed the process along. In the end not supporting USB 3.0 in windows 8 wont make us want to use thunderbolt, it will make us want to stick with windows 7.

I agree with the above that not supporting Windows 8 is a mistake.

I just ran CystalDiskMark on my USB 3.0 WD external drive and performance is down in comparison to when I ran it on Windows 7 with the proper driver installed. Intel needs to fix this.

I suggest that in addition to contacting Intel, we should also submit reports of this problem to Microsoft. Go to https://support.microsoft.com/ Microsoft Support and select Get live help.

I think we have to face the fact the neither Intel nor MS gives a damn about this. At this point it seems that the official response to "why cant I install windows 8 from Intel USB 3.0?" is "your question does not matter".

Is there a solution for this?

I just purchased my Windows 7 Dell Inspiron I15R. Should I upgrade to windows 8? Will the USB 3.0 work if I install these drivers from the intel site? Is there a quicker fix than the one described by the users above?
