p875 toshiba laptop - intel hd graphics 4000 flickering issue

hi,

having a p875 series toshiba laptop with a intel hd graphics 4000 gpu in it. but the screen flickers randomly like crazy and it gets really annoying. during web browsing or while opening a win8 app from start screen, it flickers randomly and it doesn't stop. when I turn back to desktop, minimizing that screen or app, flickering just goes away.

what I tried:

  • removed the memory modules that I added after I bought the pc. and used as is. no change. (I cannot remove the ones which came with pc because they are located under the keyboard)
  • checked the refresh rate settings and set to 60hz.. no adaptive changing option. maximum performance was selected. no change.
  • tried to download and install the latest driver from support page but it gave me an error, "this device is not validated for this driver.... etc." then I checked the toshiba's support page and downloaded the latest one. installed that. no change.
  • there is a newer driver that can be downloaded from windows update and I tried that too. no change. so I installed the previous release again.

I also wanted to check my memory reference code thing but I couldn't where I can find it. So, I was not able to check it.

I'm pasting my dxdiag info for reference. Help me guys. I'm really sick of this flickering thing...

1. Are you having this issue if you disable the Intel(R) video controller from Device Manager? Or uninstalling the video driver? Have you tried to replicate this in safe mode?

2. Have you tested with an external monitor and see if the flickering occurs in another display too?

3. Are you using the native resolution for the laptop's display?

4. Have you tried using the latest driver provided by your laptop manufacturer at?

http://support.toshiba.com/drivers Drivers & Software Support | Toshiba

5. You can also try to force the installation of the generic driver in our web site with the instructions on this site:

http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022355.htm Graphics | Computer Manufacturer Graphics Driver Detected

The file you need to use is posted here:

hi diego,

thanks for the reply first. let me give you the answers to your bulletpoints..

1- I haven't tried it by disabling the controller or uninstalling the driver.. Haven't checked it in safe mode either.

2- Haven't had the chance to try it with an external monitor. I will do so asap when I find a display to connect it..

3- Yes, I'm using the native resolution.

4- I already tried it with the latest driver from Toshiba website.

5- lastly, I will try to do a force install of that generic driver when I complete the steps above..

after all, if the same issue persists, I will get back to you from here..

thanks again for your time!

hey diego,

before trying them on the pc yesterday, I wanted to check bios settings and tried to do a memory check via WMD tool.. but when I entered bios, same flickering issue happened again on the bios screen. then I started memory check application, that flickering thing was happening like crazy (worse than bios screen) and even the back light of the monitor were going on and off occasionally..

FYI, WMD tool said that, memory check was okay.

I will definitely try the steps above you wanted me to do.. but according to the recent situation I wrote, should I try something more than the ones you told?

thanks!

If you are seeing such flickering even in the system BIOS that may indicate a hardware issue. Possibly either the display, or the memory that is installed is starting to fail, or might be other piece of hardware.

You may try with the external monitor and disabling the integrated display to see if this would be related to the laptop's display. And/or you can check with your laptop manufacturer to verify that the hardware in the system is working as expected and find the root cause of this.

diego,

I did connect my laptop to an external monitor to try if the problem could be related to laptop's display. When I connected it, laptop screen was flickering but the external monitor was NOT..

So, as you said, I thought it may be related to the laptop's display..?
