problem with 640x480 4bit on Mobile Intel 965 Graphics chipset family (I965GM) graphics

i have the problem with 640x480 4bit on Mobile Intel 965 Graphics chipset family (I965GM) graphics.

driver is being installed correctly and after the first reboot or after other device drivers installation and reboot screen mode switches to 640x480 4bit (16colors).

trying to setup normal video mode manually or automatically via wizard (systray notification in case of low-res) is useless at all, 640x480 4bit stays unchangable. it may look like it is able to apply 1280x800 32bit or another common mode but nothing happens after pressing apply button.

in case of removing original device drivers ar booting in safe mode video mode is normally works at standard vga 1024x768 32bit.

various versions of compatible Intel Graphics drivers were tested (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) with no effect.

now i got the problem on Toshiba notebook, earlier there were HP/Compaq, Asus, etc. with on-board graphic of 9-series.

in all cases Windows XP Pro SP3 was used, no antivirus software is used.

waiting for some help...

what to do?

We are also experiencing this issue across our fleet of T61 Thinkpads, Type 7659 12U

The initially reported problem has been that the machines sometime hang with a (serious) Windows error and after rebooting, the display is stuck at 640x480. The correct driver loads, the display properties (GUI) is functional, we are able to change the resolution with the slider but after hitting apply when the display comes back on, its still at 640x480

The machine does run standard vga 1024x768 32bit in Safe Mode, so this is not an issue with the panel itself.

These machines had no specific updates, and also this occurred on two machines where the user had no local admin rights.

We have tried the following.

Updating the system and video driver with Lenovo System Update, and also using the Intel provided driver.

Disabling everything but essential services from start up.

Running Chkdsk, SFC, Rebuilding the page file. Restoring the registry (from Retrospect)

Virus, malware, and various rootkit scans.

Occasional we have had a few of these machine where the problem was intermittently resolved after the Thinkpad was docked (off) and started, but the problem does return after it was rebooted.

So far the problem has not resurfaced on machines we have re-imaged, but we need a more efficient fix as we do not have capacity to re-image if the problem continues.

I have a lenovo thinkcentre m55 De1 that is experiencing the exact same problem. Have reloaded drivers, will try to upgrade BIOS next. Also one time reported unable to start hardware code (10)error. Then started again but only 640-480 4b color. If a solution is found please forward it. Thanks

Hi Michael, what are you running for AV? I can't explain why, but I have isolated this problems to machines running Symantec AV9, afer uninstalling (with NONAV script, the problem is gone, this fix has so far worked for 10+ machines, and has not resurfaced after we upgraded them to AV 10

I upgraded BIOS but the problem remained. Also having intermittent problem with user profiles. Also seen possible problem with Norton 9. Next will delete it and see. Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks.
