144hz monitor stuck on 120hz

Hello, I have the same issue as this thread https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-ARC-Graphics/144Hz-Monitor-stuck-at-120Hz-that-was-previously-working-at/m-p/1574640

I have the same exact problem on my msi laptop. But for me i lost my 144hz refresh rate when i updated to windows 11. I gained the same options, 120, 60 and 50. I updated my windows 11 around early 2023 and i gave up on getting my 144hz back since i never found a solution. Until now i understand its a driver issue but i still cant fix it. I have tried to rollback my driver to all sorts of version but nothing worked. I even went back to a version from 2022 and still didnt work. Im forever stuck on 120hz on my 144hz monitor. If i can just acquire the exact drive version needed. I have also tried using custom resolution utlity but to no avail.

Hi

Issue with your monitor's refresh rate after updating to Windows 11, similar to the one described in the thread you linked. Since rolling back drivers didn't resolve the problem, it's likely a more complex issue.

let me see some additional details of your system such as specific model of your MSI laptop and the graphics driver version you're currently using so we can narrow down the possible causes and find a solution. but have you contacted MSI support for assistance with this issue since you're using an MSI laptop. They might have specific troubleshooting steps or driver updates tailored to your laptop model.

This can be resolve the issue with your MSI laptop where the 144Hz refresh rate is not available after updating to Windows 11, following these steps:

  1. Go to advanced display settings under the display settings.
  2. Then click on the display adapter properties.
  3. From the pop-up window, tap on the monitor tab and choose 144 Hz from the list.

But keep in mind that Iif the monitor is still stuck at 120 Hz, it is possibly hardware that is not capable enough to collaborate well at that kind of refresh rate. It needs a graphics card that has a higher FPS, producing a minimum of 144 frames per second.

Hello there, Kru1cif3r

Just to add.

Ensure that both your monitor and graphics driver support 144Hz refresh rate on Windows 11. Download and install the latest graphics drivers for your MSI laptop from the official MSI website or directly from the graphics card manufacturer's website. Make sure to choose the appropriate drivers for your specific graphics card model and Windows 11. If updating to the latest drivers doesn't resolve the issue, try rolling back to previous versions of the graphics driver to see if that restores the 144Hz option. Use Device Manager to uninstall the current graphics driver, then install an older version from the manufacturer's website. Try using a custom resolution utility like CRU to manually set the refresh rate for your monitor. Be cautious when using third-party utilities and ensure you follow instructions carefully to avoid causing further issues. If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact MSI technical support for further assistance. They may have additional troubleshooting steps or firmware updates available to address compatibility issues with Windows 11.

By following these steps and seeking assistance from MSI support if necessary, you should be able to resolve the issue and regain access to the 144Hz refresh rate on your monitor.

Thanks hope it helps

Monitor: ASUS TUF Gaming VG279QL1A

1920 x 1080 @ 165 Hz

2x HDMI 2.0, 1x DisplayPort 1.2

Laptop: MSI Stealth 15M A11SEK

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060

Display Engine according to your screenshot: Intel Core i7-1185G7 Iris Xe (31.0.101.4824)

1x Type-C (DisplayPort / Thunderbolt 4)

1x HDMI (4K @ 60Hz)

The monitor sends over the cable that it can do this:

  • 1080p @ 120 Hz CTA-861 video timing
  • 1080p @ 144 Hz with individual video timing based on CVT-RB (Hfront, Vback and Vpol are different)
  • 1080p @ 165 Hz with individual video timing

Connector Type: DisplayPort     >>>      Is this correct? Which cable do you use?

It must be a “Premium High Speed HDMI Cable” or an USB-C > DisplayPort cable (ideally standard VESA-certified).

(1) Thunderbolt 4: DisplayPort HBR3

(2) HDMI 2.0 TMDS

We don't have a problem with bandwidth here, but I recommend setting up a connection with DisplayPort protocol.

This cable should also allow the monitor to operate with VESA Adaptive Sync up to its maximum refresh rate of 165 Hz.
