Card running fanless after sleep

Not sure how/where to report this bug, so I'm posting this here. I've experienced this twice so far.

When I put my computer in sleep mode, my GPU fans don't spin at all upon wake. At first I didn't notice it because I'm using an ASRock B580 Steel Legend card, and its cooling is so beefy it can run in zero RPM mode with light tasks. The first time it happened was yesterday, I only noticed it when I started running a game. I saw my temps were higher than usual and I was only at the starting screen (70+C, when I usually barely reach 60C with this card at full load), so I checked the fans and they weren't spinning at all. I restarted the PC and it resolved on its own. This morning, I saw it happen again after waking my PC. However, I tried changing the fan curve on the Graphics Software and then changing it back, this also worked to resolve the issue.

I don't think this happens every time I put my computer on sleep mode. It may be due to a prolonged sleep where my PC goes into hibernation mode (I have my hibernation timer at 3 hours).

I have the latest drivers (6790), no DDU. This is a new PC build with a fresh install, so no other drivers to interfere, except the previous ones from Intel (6739) before 6790 replaced them.

My specs:

- Ryzen 7 5700X

- MSI MAG B550M Mortar Max Wifi

- 2 x 16GB DDR4 3600 CL18

- 1TB NVME boot drive

- 2 x 1TB SATA SSD

- NZXT C850 ATX 3.1

- Windows 11 Home 24H2 Build 26100.3915

Hi turtloid,

Thank you for sharing your post in the community; it's quite intriguing. I have a few clarifications to ensure I understand the situation correctly. If you don't put your system to sleep and start playing a game, do your GPU fans stop spinning at any point? I understand that the fans don't work when waking the system from sleep, but could you confirm whether they remain inactive even when you start playing or performing tasks under load after waking? Did this issue occur when you were using version 6739? Additionally, have you reached out to ASRock for further support?

Hello, DhannielM.

Yes, the GPU fans do not suddenly stop spinning while the PC is turned on. They usually follow the fan curve I set them on, so sometimes, they do not spin at idle. I was thinking the fan curve might not be applied upon waking from sleep/hibernation, that's why I tried to reset the fan curve in the Graphics Software, and it did indeed work.

I did not experience this with driver 6739, but I only had those drivers for roughly a day or two since this is a new build. The current drivers were released soon after.

I also did not contact ASRock support, since I thought this was a minor issue, and the solution was relatively simple. I just posted this here for awareness, and if it's a driver issue, maybe it could be patched in an update someday.

Hi turtloid,

I would like to test something. Could you please revert to version 32.0.101.6739 and let me know if the issue persists? Do not forget to click the "Clean Installation" check box while reverting back.

After reverting, please inform me of the results. Then, use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely uninstall version 32.0.101.6739 and install the latest driver. Follow the steps below, and ensure you have downloaded the latest driver version (32.0.101.6790) beforehand. In step 3, please disconnect your system from the internet.

  1. Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU)< software and extract the file.
  2. Open DDU ****.exe and run extract program.
  3. Reboot into Windows* safe mode. (Refer to Start your PC in safe mode in Windows.)
  4. Go to the DDU extract path and double-click the Display Driver Uninstaller.exe to open DDU.
  5. Click Close in the Options window.
  6. Select device type to GPU and select device to INTEL.
  7. Click Clean and restart or Clean and Shutdown depending on your needs
  8. Wait the software to finish the process and auto reboot Windows to the normal mode or shutdown.

Lastly, please send me a screenshot of your fan curve configuration. Ensure that the fan curve settings are consistent between versions 32.0.101.6739 and 32.0.101.6790. This will help us troubleshoot and isolate the issue.
