Hibernation problem

Hi I just recently decided that my Nvidia GTX970 was to be retired, i was looking at different cards but found, prices from AMD and Nvidia was crazy, so after much research i found that a Intel Arc A770 would suit my needs perfectly, at the price bracket i was willing to pay. I have one problem though. My computer has an ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII IMPACT motherboard with latest BIOS. My problem is, that when i leave my computer it is set to automatically hibernate, and when i come back to the computer and press a key, it will most times power on, but no display comes back. My only option then, is to power cycle the computer and when it starts up i get the following message. The VGA card is not supported by UEFI driver CSM (Compatability Support Module) settings has been changed for better compatibility If no adjustments needed, press [F2] to confirm current settings and enter OS directly. Press F1 to run SETUP Press F2 to continue If i press F2, it will continue into windows, but the driver will complain that Resizable BAR is not enabled, but if i go into the BIOS and just select "Exit, do not save" it will not complain about Resizable BAR. Is this likely to be a problem with the graphics card BIOS (Which as far as i can read, is automatically updated with new driver updates ??) or is it more likely that this is a Motherboard BIOS incompatability issue ?

When the device does not come back, try doing WIN+CNTL+SHFT+B and see if that helps.

Hi @dsl10007,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this might have caused you. I also appreciate your suggestion @AlHill.

Resizable BAR (Base Address Register) is a PCIe capability. This is a mechanism that allows the PCIe device, such as a discrete graphics card, to negotiate the BAR size to optimize system resources. Enabling this functionality can result in a performance improvement.

To provide you with a better answer, help me with the following information:

  • Are you using a straight cable into the port, or are you using any type of adapter or docking station?
  • Did the issue start since you installed the card?
  • Did you clean the previous GPU drivers?
  • Just to clarify, is Resizable bar currently on or off?
  •  To get more information from your system, please install the Intel:registered: System Support Utility (Intel:registered: SSU): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- Open the application and select "Everything" click on "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel:registered: SSU will take you to the "Summary View". Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View". Click on "Next", save the report and attach it to your response.

Hi

No the problem is not solved, i just put it a bit on hold, because i found a firmware update for my monitor and wanted to make sure that i was running the latest firmware on the monitor to rule out this being the issue.

I am using a straight cable, that runs from the graphics card to the monitor directly, I have tried another cable and i tried plugging it in to all 3 ports on the graphics card, but the result is the same.

This problem started when i changed my graphics card from my Nvidia GTX970 to the ARC A770

When i changed the graphics card i first uninstalled the drivers for the Nvidia card, then i swapped the card to the ARC, and then i installed the drivers for the arc.

Resizable bar is ON....But when the screen does not come back after a hibernation, if i just press F1 to continue, resizable BAR will be off until i restart the computer. If i enter the BIOS and select to save changes (No changes is made or saved) then Resizable BAR is on when windows is finished booting.

Hi

Tried this, but it did not do anything.

To be honest i dont think this is a driver problem anymore as the problem has developed.

I now have to turn on and off the computer a few times to even get the computer to post and show anything on screen, even the initial bios screen.

When it refuses to start up, the Q-Code on the back of the motherboard (Asus) seems to always be 96 or 98, i dont know if this gives a hint.

When it comes on, after i restart it a few times it almost always have the BIOS error message i put in the first message.

Hi @dsl10007,

Thank you for this information. Before we continue, just to make sure, I would like you to try our previous driver just to be sure: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/726609/774229/intel-arc-iris-xe-graphics-whql-windows.html

Please restart your pc after the installation and let me know if anything changes. Thanks for all your help so far.

This problem is just evolving.

Now i need to turn my computer on and off multiple times whenever i want to boot it, when "cold"

Your suggestion of using a previous driver does not make much sense when the computer does not even want to POST, the first 5 times i turn it on, unless the older driver is reflashing the graphic card bios with an older version.

I am beginning to think this graphic card is either.

1. Defective (Maybe something that prevents it booting before it reaches a certain temperature ?)

2. There is some sort of incompatability between my graphics card and the motherboard or the monitor i use.

It has gotten to a state, where if i boot the computer, it finally POSTS, but gives me the BIOS error stated in my other posts, if i go into BIOS to press "Save and exit" sometimes when the computer exits this, it will "reset" and then it will not POST again, until i have had the computer turned off.

I even had a situation where the computer POST'ed, i entered the Bitlocker password and the computer started loading, but when the screen was just before login, it would "reset", probably because of a resolution change, and then it would not come on. I tried entering my login password and i got the welcome sound, so the computer was working, there was just no signal coming to the screen.

I updated yesterday to the latest May drivers, but if you still feel that a "downgrade" to older drivers, even with the problems i describe, could solve it, i will certainly try.

Hi @dsl10007,

Thank you for the update, I am sorry to hear you are having more issues. I completely understand your point, actually there is an even newer driver that I would like you to try before we jump into any conclusions.

Can you please try the following driver:

As stated in my post above yours

"I updated yesterday to the latest May drivers, but if you still feel that a "downgrade" to older drivers, even with the problems i describe, could solve it, i will certainly try."

I had already updated to this driver, and it made no difference.

It seems that if hibernating and i pull the HDMI cable out of the GFX card before powering on, and then inserting it after power on, there is a greater chance of it working, than if i just leave the cable in.

Not a perfect solution, does not work absolutely every time, but most times.

To me it seems the GFX card does not send proper "Wake up" message to the screen to make it "power up"

PS. Yes i tried a different cable, and yes i tried both HDMI and all 3 DP outputs, and also DP with different cables.

dsl10007, Thank you very much for letting us know those results.

We are sorry to hear the issue persists after trying the suggestions provided previously.

We will continue with our research on this scenario. As soon as I get any updates, I will post all the details on this thread.

Hello dsl10007, I just received an update on this matter.

After reviewing the case we can actually confirm that this is a known issue as noted in the driver's release notes. At this point, the next thing to do then will be to wait as this is something our developer team is investigating and working on fixing. Once it is fixed it would be highlighted and shown in the driver Release Notes.

Hi

It seems that the latest update to the driver has mostly solved the problem with the computer not giving me video when resuming from hibernation.

On the other hand, the problem with the computer refusing to show video persists, i have found that if i disconnect the HDMI cable before power on, and then i wait until a certain Q-Code is shown on the motherboard display, and i then plug in the HDMI cable i will get BIOS POST and a working computer, around 9/10 times, so it seems like there is something that is not quite right with the initialisation of the graphics card when it boots up from cold.

Or atleast there is, with my combination of card and my screen.

I am hoping that further investigation will be able to fix this is an upcoming "bios" update for the graphic card. I assume these are "flashed" whenever a new driver that has a new "bios" is released ?

PS. I do not mention the specific Q-Code, because it does not seem relevant, it would probably also work if i plug in after it shows this code, it is just easier to do it at that code, because it is shown slightly longer than the other codes.
