Resident Evil 4 crashes during cutscenes driver version 31.0.101.4885

Resident Evil 4 Crashes during some cut scenes. It seems to be caused by the game's hair physics, because the moment I turned it off, the game ran smoothly almost immediately. The setting was set to Normal.

System:
i9 9900KF

Intel Arc A770 LE 16gb

64gb DDR4 3600mhz RAM

Asus Rog Strix Z390-F(ReBAR enabled)

Crucial 4tb NVME Solid State Drive

Windows 10 Home

The Fix:Disable Hair physics completely, or cut scenes will crash. Not sure if it's only my system though, as I know that Intel Arc doesn't support 9th gen CPUs officially.

Hello Carlos_C,

Thank you for posting back in the Intel Communities. We understand that experiencing crashing issues may be frustrating, and we will be more than glad to help you. To better assist you, please provide us with the following:

  • When did the crashing issue start?
  • Is Resizable BAR enabled in your system?
  • Did you have another graphics card before you installed the Intel Arc graphics adapter?
  • Which distribution service do you use to install the games? (Steam, Epic Games, Microsoft Store, Xbox Store)
  • We would like to check if your system is up to date and look at further details about your system environment. Share with us a report using the Intel SSU:
    • Open the application and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel SSU will take you to the "Summary View."
    • Click on the menu where it says: "Summary" to change it to "Detailed View."
    • To save your scan: click "Next" and then "Save.

Hello @Carlos_C,

Before we closed the thread, we went ahead and tested this game to see if we were able to replicate your problem. After testing the game, we were unable to reproduce the issue. We played the game without any crashes, everything went smoothly. We used the latest driver version 31.0.101.4900, so we suggest that you update your graphics driver as well. But before installing the new driver, it's essential to run the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) software. This will remove any previous driver files and leftovers that can affect your system's functionality.

We also want to share a video of our testing process in the lab. Please let us know if anything is missing that we should try. During our testing, we used Hair Strands settings on normal and high:

Hello Jean and thank you for your response,

I used DDU to uninstall and install 31.0.101.4900 and while I had some stability at the start (albeit with a significant drop in frames) The game did not crash in the Main Story.

However, this is not the case with the "Separate Ways" DLC, as the game crashes after a few moments after the first cutscene. Just to make sure I reinstalled the game just to be certain that no files were corrupt and was working off a clean install. I was able to pinpoint one thing though: I can either have Ray Tracing on, or Have Hair Strand Physics on.

I think I can just chalk this one up to just not having a strong enough system, but just so I can make sure of one thing, can you ask the team to have the game's settings set to the Ray Tracing Preset with Hair strands On? just to be sure, because I replicated the test videos by making sure I picked the Balanced Preset and while I had some drops in performance, the game did not crash and then I alternated between Ray Tracing with hair strands off and Ray Tracing off with hair strands = High. Both worked, but Ray Tracing + Hair Strands caused the game to crash. One final point: It seems the crash tends to happen when there are multiple characters on screen with all their hair physics going. this is especially apparent in the Cabin Defense scene. Attached is my SSU report along with three test videos (All videos have the "Balanced" preset on)

Thank you for your time!

UPDATE:

As of driver version 31.0.101.4952, I no longer crash with both Ray Tracing and Hair Strands set to high.

Seems like whatever this driver did has fixed my issue. Thank you all for helping me troubleshoot.
