Ubuntu/Linux Graphical Glitches in V Rising B580

Hello,

PC Specs

MotherBoard ROG STRIX Z790-A GAMING WIFI II

CPU Brand: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KS

Ubuntu Core 24.10

Kernel Name: Linux

Kernel Version: 6.11.0-26-generic
Driver: Intel Mesa Intel(R) Graphics (BMG G21)
Driver Version: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 24.2.3 - kisak-mesa
RAM: 31320 Mb
SSD

Installation is a couple months old, basically a standard Ubuntu new installation without any major change, as vanilla as you can get.

I followed the steps of https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/driver/client/overview.html in order to install the custom drivers.

Currently running the game in steam with Proton

Steps to Reproduce the Issue:
So far it  seems it happen with a regular  new installation of 24.10, then install steam, follow your steps to install the drivers, install the game and run the game, Character creation menu and the game itself shows this issue.

Issue:
The game launches   without issues, no graphical issues on the main menu and there seems to be no issues with any menu. The issue is that the game itself including character creation screen looks dark, almost like textures are missing or the lighting in the game is not working properly. It is impossible to play the game looking at just black silhouettes .

I have tested changing all options in the graphical menu, Quality, Anti-aliasing, upscaling, shadows, depth, screen mode, reflections, blur, everything.  Yes, I have change the contrast of the game and the light balance and this is not the issue.

No, other games look fine, is not an issue on the monitor, this is something on this game.

I have tested using Proton experimental, proton 10 beta, proton 9 and proton 8, I have tried using dx11 and dx12.

I tried forcing  the game to use OpenGL  by using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1, the problems gets even worse, even more darker.

I have verify integrity of files, I have checked Proton site and most of the people have reported the game running without issues but using AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

So I already have tested multiple things, also to give a bit more context, I have other games where this graphic card present issues, I think most of the issues i would say are related to lighting and reflection, since to me it seems like water reflection and light make some assets to flicker,   I may open other post for those.

This is my first time posting in this forum since I already tried solving the issue on  my own, if I posted this in a wrong place, please tell me and help me.

If you need any log, let me know, if anybody knows a magic trick to fix this, also let me know.

I am trying to be as specific and provide the most amount of information  i can, I think this is a issue with the drivers and i understand some levels of debug and replication are needed, I appreciate any help given, I mostly post this to maybe get some attention to some issues I have had with the drivers and graphics card.

Isolis

Hi @Isolis,

Thank you for posting here in our community. To effectively diagnose and address the issue you're experiencing, I kindly ask you to provide detailed responses to the following questions. This information will help us isolate the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action.

  • Please provide the SSU log report and share it here so I can review your system's configuration.
  • Could you let me know the origin of the game? Where did it come from, and where did you download it?
  • Is it working fine before?
  • Have you tried to contact the game developer? may I know their insights?
  • Kindly share some screenshots and recordings of your game settings so we can replicate and check the issue on our end using the same settings you use during gameplay.

I look forward to your response and am committed to resolving your issue promptly.

Warm regards,

Hello Randy,

I ran the SSU script with sudo and that is what it came out.  Attaching the file.

So I installed steam through ubuntu App that i think uses snap below,  the game is call VRising  and it came from the Steam store, installed through steam and using Proton for compatibility.  Most of the games i have work fine out of the box, is mostly some new games that have some issues, like not been able to run Marvel Rivals or Oblivion remaster because  those games  complain about direxct 12 not been supported.

This game has  not worked before, this is a fresh installation of the game, repairing the games does not fix the issue. Most users on Proton reports no issues on linux.

I have not contacted the developer but I doubt it is a issue solely related to this particular game, normally games does not support linux, that is why we have to use Proton for the compatibility  layer,  there is also graphical glitches in other games like grounded( also seems related to lighting), Cyberpunk 2077 lighting reflection on water and glass, Space marine 2 textures flickering and water with weird reflection. I tried capturing the flickering in Space Marine 2 but since it flickers, the only issue in the image is the weird water reflection. So I think most of the issues are related to lighting and reflection.

For extra consideration, I used to have the Arc 770  with this current installation and also with   Pop OS that used an older version of drivers, and at least in Cyberpunk the issue was the same, issues with reflections. I mention these games for context.

For insights, Proton site for compatibility is the way to go,  but in this case no reports of this specific issue but Arc 770 or B580 are not common in linux.

I attached 2 images of the current configuration  of the graphics of the game, since no options have fix the issue, a standard installation should suffice or copy those config, no options set on launch on steam for this game.

Regards,

Isolis

Hello Randy,

I have to inform i think i found the solution to what it seems are most of the issues, So this gpu+drivers+mesa also had the issue of been unable to play some games that required dx12, it complained about GPU not supporting the dx12, there is a post in this forum about  installing flathub and forcing steam to use a new  version of mesa that is no the one that is currently on ubuntu.

I did that, i uninstall steam from snap, installed flathub and install steams through there, i follow the instruction in that post to install mesa-git and that seems to be the fix, no weird flickering, no reflection issues,  VRising lighting works properly,  I can even launch oblivion remaster, i need to test if that fix marvel rivals to.

For any one that tries to do this in ubuntu, had in mind that if you use flatpack/flathub sometimes it had issues with externall SSD, so you need to manually tell flatpak to access steam with a command and restart flatpak

I would say that the major issue here although seems to be not the fault of the drivers is that the current version ubuntu/mesa in my case was causing a lot of issues and i assume some will face the same.

The post is called :

Getting ES:Oblivion Remastered Working on Intel Arc B580 (Ubuntu) – Here's How
