LTE modem not detecting SIM card

Hi,

I am trying to set up the LTE modem as per the instructions on the wiki. Everything seems to be work (modem detected, SIM card detected) but when I use the modemmanager and print out the details it says the SIM is missing. I had to change the permissions for the CU command line utility to access the sim (chmod 666 /dev/tyACM0) but once I had done this I got the following output from the AT commands:

+CGSN: "3593**************"

+CCID: 89******************

+XSIMSTATE: 0,11,1,1

+XLOCK: "PN",5,0,"PU",5,0,"PP",5,0,"PC",5,0,"PS",5,0

Any idea how best to debug this?

Hello jonathanbyrn,

Thank you for your interest in the Intel Aero Compute Board.

Could you please provide us the output of mmcli -m 0 and also for aero-get-version.py ?

Kindest regards,

Eliza

Hello jonathanbyrn,

Thank you for the information provided!

While checking the error that you have received on Modem Manager I came to the below conclusion. You can check more about this on: http://www.iot.com.tr/uploads/pdf/Telit_xN930_AT_Commands_Reference_Guide_r1.pdf http://www.iot.com.tr/uploads/pdf/Telit_xN930_AT_Commands_Reference_Guide_r1.pdf - pg 230

+CGSN: "3593**************"

+CCID: < ICCID>

ICCID: Integrated Circuit Card ID of the SIM Card

+XSIMSTATE: 0,11,1,1

+XSIMSTATE , , ,

Mode 0 = disabled (default)

SIM state 11 = SIM Reactivated

PB Ready 1 = +PBREADY URC Received.

SMS Ready 1 = SIM SMS Caching completed URC Received

+XLOCK: "PN",5,0,"PU",5,0,"PP",5,0,"PC",5,0,"PS",5,0

+XLOCK: ,, ,..., ,,

fac PN = Network Personalisation (refer GSM 02.22 [33])

Lock State 5 = the lock is DISABLED

Lock result 0 = continue operation

fac PU = network sUbset Personalisation (refer GSM 02.22 [33])

Lock State 5 = the lock is DISABLED

Lock result 0 = continue operation

fac PP = service Provider Personalisation (refer GSM 02.22 [33]) "PC" Corporate Personalisation (refer GSM 02.22 [33])

Lock State 5 = the lock is DISABLED

Lock result 0 = continue operation

fac PS = PH-SIM (lock Phone to SIM card)

Lock State 5 = the lock is DISABLED

Lock result 0 = continue operation

The output of mmcli -m 0 shows:

Status | lock: 'unknown'

| unlock retries: 'unknown'

which means that the SIM is not longer recognized.

Could you please test the SIM card on a phone to make sure that it's still working?

Also, is it possible to use another SIM card on the drone?

Thank you in advance,

Eliza

Hi Eliza,

Yes as it is still not working. I tested the SIM card in another phone and it is unlocked and working. I also tried another carrier network and the modem didn't pick up that either. I skipped ahead on the instructions and set up the APN in case that was the cause of the SIM being not detected but still not joy.

Any other recommendations for debugging?

Hello jonathanbyrn,

Could you please provide us a picture of the SIM card slot and one with the SIM card inserted?

Thank you in advance,

I don't have access to the drone at the moment but will send some pictures on tomorrow. I don't think it is the sim placement as when I send the AT+CIMI? command it is detecting the SIM card and returning the correct code.

One thing I did notice was when I call AT+CFUN? I get the following:

+CFUN: 4,0

4 means disable phone both transmit and receive RF circuits So it seems to be in airplane mode!

I can set it using AT commands but when I restart the drone it goes back into airplane mode. Is that normal?

regards

Hello jonathanbyrn,

Thank you, we are waiting for the pictures.

Could you please let us know the output of uname -a?

Thank you very much,

Here you go!

Should it be booting into airplane mode on startup?

Hello jonathanbyrne,

Thank you very much for the picture!

No, this is not an expected behavior.

Could you please make sure that you are booting into the right kernel? The version should be 4.4.76-aero-1.2. You can check that by running the command uname -a.

Looking forward to your reply!

Best regards,

hi Eliza,

I ran uname -a and got the following:

Linux lynette 4.4.76-aero-1.2 # 1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 21 09:55:38 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

so it looks like the kernel version is correct.

Hello jonathanbyrn,

Indeed, thank you!

Is it possible to check if you notice the same behavior if you flash the Yocto image on the drone?

I have also noticed that you are using Ubuntu 16.04.5 and the Aero Wiki recommends Ubuntu 16.04.3. This might have also cause these problems.

Thank you!

hi Eliza,

unfortunately I do not have the time to reformat the drone as it took me a long time to get set up. Have you any other suggestions for debugging the problem?

regards

Jonathan

Hello jonathanbyrn,

In this case, could you please let us know what is the modem that you are using? Have you tried with another one?

Also, are you still experiencing the "airplane mode" issue on startup?

Thank you,

Eliza

Hi Eliza,

I tried a different modem but it didn't work as it doesn't have the intel chipset. My colleagues in Intel San Diego are using an identical modem with no problem. Still booting into airplane mode every time.....

Hello jonathanbyrne,

Could you please let us know what is the modem that you are using?

Also, we strongly recommend to use Yocto instead of Ubuntu just to make sure that this is not a software-related issue.

Thank you,

Eliza

Hi Eliza,

It is a fibocom the l850 GL . I have a colleague who is also setting up an aero now. I will ask her to test the setup with Yocto before moving to ubuntu.

Hi Eliza,

so are you basically saying that the modem doesn't work on ubuntu? Have you heard of anyone getting it working on ubuntu?

regards

Jonathan
