Obtain GPS data without using Dronekit

Jump to solution

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to access the information provided by the GPS without having to use dronekit. I can receive the values provided by the IMU using the BMI160 drivers and getting them through the SPI interface. I was wondering if there was a similar way of doing that with the GPS. According to the wiki the GPS is connected to through the UART port so I was wondering if it was possible to get it directly that way without having to use dronekit or any other API. Are there any drivers or something for the GPS that can allow me to access the values in a similar fashion to the IMU. Thank you.

Hi JorgeG,

It seems that you need the API to read the GPS information. You could see if the BMM150 or MS5611 have drivers you could access with the SPI, though I'm not sure if it has been tried. You could try it and share the results with the community. You could also try some code that gets estimates, but it doesn't read from the GPS directly and we don't recommend it since the data isn't reliable.
