yocto vs the open-source Yocto Linux* operating system

Jump to solution

Hi

I am confused about linux operating system shipped with compute board.what kind of distribution is that?

The compute board ships with the open-source Yocto Linux* operating system, and offers sample applications and APIs for flight and vision interfaces, reducing hurdles for developers of sophisticated drone applications.

Important Note: It is necessary to update the BIOS, FPGA, and Flight Controller for this software release. Instructions to update the BIOS, FPGA and Flight Controller are located on the Wiki.

It's not an embedded Linux distribution – it creates a custom one for you

The Yocto Project is an open source collaboration project that provides templates, tools and methods to help you create custom Linux-based systems for embedded products regardless of the hardware architecture

Hi aerobot,

The Yocto Project allows developers to customize and build their own image for embedded products. The Aero platform is pre-flashed with a Yocto based image as you mentioned. You can find the source and recipe files on the Aero github below:

Hi Ezequiel

What is the difference between distribution and image then ? According to yocto website it should not be named as yocto linux right?

I understand it can be confusing. A distribution is a standardized image that can be used on multiple platforms. In this context, an image is customized for a specific platform. The Yocto Project provides tools such as the Board Support Package (BSP) to build a customized image, in this case for the Aero platform.

We provide an Aero image that has already been built with common tools that can be used by developers. The developers can chose to take the source we provide and build a custom image but it is not required.

Hi Ezequiel

After flashing aero linux ISO and running "aero-get.version.py" I got the exact distribution

"Poky Aero(Intel Aero Linux Distro) 1.6.0 (pyro)"
