I recently purchased an Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition 11.1.060 and am having trouble installing it. In the installation process, it says that the compiler requires that a Microsoft development product be installed. That message is vague and I am having a lot of trouble finding useful help online.

You need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ before installing Intel compiler. See product documentation, specifically, the Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition Installation Guide and Release Notes:
