i know that this must be an amazingly stupid question -- sorry.
where do i download the C++ compiler for Linux?
i have many rudimentary questions. might there be knowledgeable people in nyc who are not averse to having an otherwise intelligent 55 year-old in their company?

If you have a license key, you could open a support account, if you haven't already done so, at https://registrationcenter.intel.com, then switch to the account owners' view and select a download.
i don't have intel software -- only hardware -- so how do i register? i saw no stated restriction on downloading the C++ compiler for linux.
intel is telling me that "problems with my account" prevent them from completing the request. where do i go from here?

Do you mean you didn't find the URL to sign up for non-commercial compiler, if your intended use qualifies?

again, i am told that "problems with my account" prevent further transaction.
now what?!
(btw, is it possible to be notified when someone responds to a forum thread)

Perhaps you might consider posting a more complete description on the download and licensing forum.
sorry to appear as an idiot, but i have been speaking english for more than 50 years and i cannot extract meaning from "... description on the download and licensing forum"

I think Tim is suggesting that you try posting in the forum that is dedicated to problems like the one you're having:
http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-software-development-products-download-registration-licensing/
and that you include a detailed description of the problem you're seeing, i.e. exactly what URL you're using, what info you're providing and exactly what happens when you enter the info.
Hope this helps!
