STK1AW32SC regularly freezes on startup

My compute stick regularly freezes on startup. This is before the startup screen even shows. BIOS is updated to version 30 which makes no difference. Additionally, it seems to be getting worse. A hard reset gets the stick to start up properly, but yesterday it required two hard resets. It started doing this fairly quickly after purchase. Is this a known bug, or do I need to exchange my faulty stick? Problem is, I don't have a receipt so presumably that would mean I'm out of luck.

You are definitely not the only one. There is a thread that you might want to post to. My Compute Stick STK1AW32SC only rarely fails to boot up like this. I have noticed that posters with this problem tend to be running Windows 10 x64, is this the case for you? Sometimes I wonder if it is in part due to my relatively finicky Samsung 50HU6950 which only grudgingly functions as a PC monitor. When it happens to me, the monitor changes from No Cable Connected to No Signal and the blue LED stays on and the Compute Stick does nothing. My VIZIO monitor doesn't make a distinction between the two states, however. Also this seems to happen much more frequently when Windows wants to do an update. Have you checked that there are no updates pending? It would be cool if there were more blinkenlights on the Compute Stick so it could tell you what it thought it was doing when it got into this state or even the capacity to hook another PC up to it via USB so as to have a better chance of diagnosing the problem.

Hello:

Thank you very much to Repeat%20Offender for the information provided above.

To VSNL:

In regard to your inquiry, no, there is no known bug with the stick, but there are some units that could get defective or that might have some performance problems.

There is a newer BIOS version which is 0032, please try to install it using the F7 method:

Instructions to do the BIOS update:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005724.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005724.html

And this is the .BIO file needed:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26536/BIOS-Update-SCCHTAX5-86A-?product=91065 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26536/BIOS-Update-SCCHTAX5-86A-?product=91065

If after trying the BIOs update above the problem persists, then a replacement of the unit will be needed.

To do that you can either get in contact with the place of purchase, to verify with them if they can do that for you because they have their own warranty policy, or we can always replace it for you since Intel provides 1 year of warranty for the stick.

If you are interested in the replacement, the fastest way to do it will be by getting in contact directly with us through chat, email, phone or online support, you just need to select stick on product type and you will get those options:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html# @12 http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html# @12

Or we can replace the stick for you through here in our forums, please let me know which option works better for you.

Any questions, please let me know.

Alberto

I've done the new firmware update and about 10-15 boots later it hasn't frozen up yet. I'd like to do some more testing, but so far so good.

It froze again today, so it seems like the firmware update did not solve it. I guess I'll need a replacement then. How do I go about this?

I'm on my 3rd stick now, and on the third boot this one had the exact same problem (as did the previous one). While I'm very pleased with Intel's handling of the case and their support, I'm getting incredibly frustrated with this lemon I bought.

Hello VSNL:

Thank you very much for letting us know those results.

We are really sorry to hear that that the problem persists even after the compute stick was replaced, we understand your frustration.

We will do further research on this matter, because the fact that this is the 3rd unit you have and the problem remains, indicates that the problem might be related to a different component.

Could you please provide the exact model of the monitor or TV you are using?

That will really help us in order to review this case.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards
