Hello, just purchased the Intel Compute Stick, during the setup and then windows update I have notice is was slow and freezing. I looked in the event log and noticed lots of "The IO operation at logical block address for Disk 0 was retried" warning messages.
I had tried to shut down, but froze during the shut down process; I have rebooted, seemed ok for a while and the same errors are popping up again in the event log.
Has anyone experience it? or is the unit defective?
See if you have the latest BIOS, if not you can update it to the latest.

so I had returned it under warranty right after my posting, since then I got a new stick, seemed ok at the beginning but same errors were popping up and symptoms were:

at this point the stick still works but don't know how reliable it can be regarding storage with these errors. not sure if this was a bad batch or os related?
doing more research shows that the device was manufactured by ECS?

latency is quite high, which I suppose is most likely due to the event 153 disk errors?
I've just purchased an Intel Compute Stick and I'm experiencing the exact same problem.

i didnt resolve it, still an issue. I have RMAed the second stick for refund for refund this time, but might try a third stick because i like the idea, i wanted to use it when I travel.
i havent retried reseting and re-installing. Upgrading the BIOS didnt fix the issue for me. I dont have with me but i will share the SN mid next week, in case there is a bad batch with the kingston drive??, not sure either if the drives have a firmware that can be upgraded also?
at this point not sure the cause, and since it is all-in-one it is hard to pinpoint the issue!
I just tried upgrading the BIOS and it's still the same. If I unzip a big file, two or so warnings appear in the event viewer, and in the resouce monitor disk usage and latency can be seen going up a lot, to the point of stopping the unzipping process several times.
I tried upgrading all intel drivers hoping that any io driver could resolve the problem... but again no results.
The good thing is that it seems that performance concerns aside, there aren't any data corruption problems.
In the box says that my stick was manufactued in May 20 2015.
After some tests I keep experiencing the IO operation warnings. The thing is the stick works ok aside of those warnings.
I'm beggining to think they're consequence of the low performance storage of the ICS, and maybe it's normal their ocassional appearing.
Someone else can do a quick check in the event viewer ("system" category) to see if there are "disk" labeled warnings stating "IO operation..." too? Thanks in advance.
fyi my SN is GEFC52301P51, not sure when it was manufactured as I don't have the box with me, but was bought in Canada
have not used it over a week but today was 39 errors is ~1 hour
you are right don't seems to be data corruption at this point just timeouts
I also see these errors in the event viewer on Windows 10 whenever I am doing something with significant disk activity (ie. opening event viewer). Though I haven't been able to determine whether there are any lockups/freezes that can be attributed as I'm usually remotely accessing the ICS via VNC which makes detecting any hiccups near impossible. Seems plausible they are harmless, though it would be nice to know for sure.
I return my second stick as well...
The symptoms is hanging when the OS communicates to the HD, it can feel that the whole computer is hangs for a few second. More annoying than dangerous for the data.
My friend had one, so I asked to see and had the same errors. probably needs a firmware update?
It would seems that many of them are affected...
We have exact the same problem (Win 10 Version of Intel Compute Stick), BIOS updated to current 0028 Version. (I also changed the Performance Settings in UEFI and made a complete system recovery after the UEFI Update [reinstall without keeping data])
The OS freezes lesser but still occurs. (Disk Error 153 in the Eventlog).
The Stick also uses a Kingston SSD Drive (S10032)
I hope, Intel will fix this soon.

After that is done try doing a system restore, please follow the steps here to reset the system to factory defaults:
Remove any SD cards from the Intel® Compute Stick before initiating a Windows refresh or reset procedure.

Yes, I did both and it hangs after that not so often, but still freezes with the same Disk Error.
I also tried three different compute sticks (same Product Model) and the problem occurs on all three sticks.
Also I looked on the Kingston Website for a Firmware Update of the build-in flash drive, but Kingston did not supply a firmware update.
The Intel® compute Stick you have is the one that comes with Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu?

Does the system freezes all the time or only when you are running certain tasks?
Are you using wireless keyboards and mouse or USB connections?
If yes, have you try using USB connection? Or test it with different wireless keyboard and mouse if it is possible.

The Sticks are all with Windows 10, the System freezes all the time (also when idle), but irregular.
We used wired keyboard & Mouse with a powered USB Hub, Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse and Wireless (Logitech Unify) Keyboard & Mouse, the problem occurs with every configuration and as I wrote on three sticks.
We already installed the latest drivers (BIOS Update, latest Driver, Complete System Restore (without keeping any user data), changing the power settings in UEFI to performance) before we wrote here.
I think the problem is from the build-in Kingston Flash drive, maybe Intel will get a firmware update for this?
Btw. the customer returned all ten sticks, we had now returned seven pieces of the stick, the three open sticks are on site.
Is it so hard for Intel to give us an official answer (like: this is normal, no worry / this is an issue with the MMC or interface, we are working on it etc) instead of keep advising to update drivers and BIOS? The customer looks quite technical oriented (from a computer store) and furthermore he is always giving you answers and confirmations. Why someone from Intel cannot simply look into the event viewer of a Computer Stick (with Windows, of course), search for the "retried" event and if found just talk with a HW or driver developer to see if it is normal or not??

Can you elaborate a little more on your testing procedure? In other words, are you confirming that you tested several ICS units, all having the Kingston S10032 MMC drive, you used disk intensive applications and tests and you never found on your units a Warning with Event ID=153 in the System Log?
If yes, I will be happy to exchange my unit with one of yours because this is the only guarantee that the unit will be fine: some customers already tried and exchanged a lot of these units just to always see the behavior described in this thread.
Well, I tested the Intel® Compute Stick STCK1A32WFC upgraded to Windows 10 and it does not freeze and under the event log I did not see any error like The IO operation at logical block address for Disk 0 was retried.
I just tested the unit as it comes, I did not add any additional Micro SD card or anything else, and if you are having these problems with many different units I will need to escalate to our engineering department for further investigation.
